Description
In last week’s run of Forever 16 strips, people seemed to be put off by Joel and Katy’s sarcastic antagonism towards each other. They’re a little more civil towards each other in this week’s strips, so let’s see what happens. There’s no story this week, just a batch of gag-a-day strips. Most of them are pop culture riffs, like this one, which is another criticism I’ve received about the strip – some folks think I should ease off the pop culture stuff and do more character-based humor. But my aim is to do both at once, revealing more about the characters by how they react to the pop culture around them. In this case, Aaron’s attempt to bullshit his way through his English assignment by going to see Harry Hook’s loosely adapted Lord of the Flies movie says a lot about the kind of guy he is – he always thinks he’s got a foolproof plan that nobody else would think of, but that’s only because his plans are so stupid.

You know, back when I was in fifth grade, the teacher made part of the class read Charlotte's Web (we were doing book reading groups) and had to take AR (Accelerated Reader) tests on the computer.
Anybody who failed the test had to reread the whole book because she assumed that the people who failed only watched the movie instead of reading the book

That doesn't speak for me, I loved the more antagonistic turn they had last week. It gave Joel needed depth besides being the focus character. Before then, it seemed like his main role was to look agape and make sarcastic remarks about whatever freak-of-the-week he encountered, although unlike too many other webcomics that recycled that formula, here it was mostly pop-culture based, rather than political. Making him not just a music snob but an outspoken one gives him a more interesting character, one that doesn't always have to be the one we side with in an argument. I mean, there was at least one person last week who did agree with Katie on that argument they had. That sounds like a good sign to me.

His character would be better if there's direct context of him being a jerk as a flaw, Venture Bros and Archer did this well.

This is a new direction for the character, if we give Jesse time I'm sure he'd think up something. Sad that he seems to be chickening out on that aspect.

To me he could go into a darker comedy like Dan Vs or just have Joel be an annoying jerk like Johnny Test

I remember reading Lord of the Flies. My friends occasionally tease each other with "KILL THE PIG! SPILL ITS BLOOD! BASH 'ER IN!"

Sometimes a plan is only foolproof, because the plan itself is foolish.
