Description This has been a busy week for me - tons of hours at work really put a hamper on my drawing time (and with Black Friday around the corner, it's only gonna get busier). So when I find some time to work on some personal stuff, I like to be able to experiment with techniques I haven't tried before.

Hey look, it's my four favorite 'toon girls again! I had an urge to drop Meg, Frankie, Kim, and Musashi in the drink, and once again, I tried to make their poses as "swimmy" as possible. It's also been a long time since I had the time to draw a full-color underwater scene, and with this one, I wanted to crank my lighting and shading techniques up a notch. What do you think, did I pull it off?

Always like the way how you draw those characters in your own style! Love it and this picture, too!

i hate "styhleless style". it's simply art what is supposed to look ugly, even on "non-ugly" things.

I love this piece. You put some great personality into each of the charaters, so much so that they could fit the bill of that old comic method of posing your characters to define their mood or action just by silhouette. The gentle gradient from light blue to dark blue is superb, and the extra rays of light are a great touch.

Totally believable that they all jumped into a pool just to capture this great screenshot; it's like they're making a fan piece for Switchfoot's Stars music video.

And extra kudos for including Kim; I still stay up until 1:30 in the morning on my days off to watch that show.

Great underwater piece with cartoon babes, as usual, Jesse- I like how Jessie stands out a bit from the other three; her expression looks so seductive

I can safely say your underwater poses are growing stronger each time - and they DO say "absence makes the heart grow stronger"

I noticed the cool shading you've included here too, another superb sign of your developing skills, old chum

Awesome work, as always! It's been quite a while, hasn't it? I'd have to say Frankie and Musashi/Jessie are the best out of all of them.

Nyaaaagh, why does everyone use her Japanese name, I much prefer calling her "Jessie" then "Musashi". I more often associate Musashi with a japanese sword warrior or something.

I went to a Japanese restaurant named Musashi for my tenth birthday, years ago.

jbwarner86 In reply to Junitea [2009-11-17 04:41:07 +0000 UTC]

Musashi actually was named for legendary Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. And James' Japanese name, Kojirou, derives from Sasaki Kojirou, Miyamoto Musashi's most famous rival. The joke in the Japanese version is that they're named after these legendarily talented samurai who practially never lost a battle, and yet they're the most incompetent characters on the show and have never won a battle.

Aqua311 In reply to jbwarner86 [2009-11-19 00:48:45 +0000 UTC]

That's ironic. Jessie's and James' namesakes are so famous and yet those two rocket members are complete idiots.

While we're on the subject, I know someone who says that Miyamoto, the Nintendo guy, is God... and I think I agree.

Shigeru Miyamoto inspired another "PokΓ©mon" character's name, appropriately enough - Satoshi's rival Shigeru (or Gary, as he's known over here, which is a name that doesn't have any hidden significance, as far as I know).

torquesmacky In reply to jbwarner86 [2009-11-17 06:50:37 +0000 UTC]

So that's where "Jessie" and "James" are derived from. I thought 4Kids was just being randomly "clever."

There are a lot of Japanese in-jokes in the show that you won't get if you only watch the dub. Most of them came from the first year, in the form of untranslatable Japanese puns that nobody gave a second thought 'cause they didn't think the anime would be going to America. (One of my favorites is from the first episode, where Satoshi tries to get to know Pikachu and asks to hear his "story" ("hanashi"), but Pikachu thinks he said "no teeth" ("ha nashi") and opens his mouth to prove that he in fact has plenty of teeth.)

Yup! It passed with flying colors.

It's good that you've got steady income. I was gettin' a lil' worried tryin' to figure out what happened to your production. Makes sense now.

BTW, I still remember the HUGE Disney pic that you were workin' on. Still in production, or it's slated til' you have time to get around to it???

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jbwarner86 In reply to Severflame [2009-11-17 03:48:52 +0000 UTC]

I've done quite a few sketches in the last two months that I want to turn into full-blown color pieces, and the Disney one is among them. But I also have my commissions to worry about, too, and as I've said, many of them are very complicated and specific. So the rate at which I get this stuff out is going to remain slow for a while longer.
