Description
I suppose this shouldn't come as a surprise to me, what with this being DeviantArt and all, but man, it's hard to find wholesome underwater art these days.
I was looking back at some of my older Off the Deep End stuff recently, and whenever people favorite my work, I often like to skim whatever folder they put it in, y'know, to see if they have any other interests similar to mine. There's a lot of people around here who collect underwater-themed artwork... but so much of that artwork is so dang dark. A lot of drowning, a lot of perilous situations, and a lot of straight-up porn too. And it always seems like such a disturbing disconnect to see my happy little scenes of underwater friendship placed in the same gallery as Samus Aran in a sunken car sucking on the Wii Fit trainer's feet.
I don't know if I ever made this clear, but I thought it was self-evident all along - I don't draw underwater art for fetish purposes. I draw it to explore the creative possibilities of putting my characters in an environment with its own wild set of rules. And I'm not here to be judgmental, either - as long as we're all adults and you're not hurting anyone, hey, do whatever makes you happy. But every once in a while I look around at the seemingly never-ending deluge of underwater fetish stuff on DA and I think "Man, it'd be nice if someone broke up the monotony a little bit." So once again, I opt to be the change I hope to see in the world.
I may not get to do Off the Deep End as a series again anytime soon, but the characters are always fun to draw when I'm in the mood for something cheerful. Especially Spencer and his friends, because I don't think I've ever shown them in a bad mood - they're the ultimate avatars for my creative credo that underwater is the most fun place to be. So I dashed off this quick shot of Kyle, Spencer, Brenda, and Jasmine in a big smiley underwater group hug. A little bit of submerged positivity in case anyone needed it today

Well, that is a relief to hear, because you primarily draw children and teenagers!

That was what I thought made it obvious! But of course, then I remember which website I'm on.

Man, if only there were more artists like you around here - in both mindset and quality of content.Β Then perhaps it'd be worth staying on this site a little longer, without or without the "Eclipse reboot".
But thank you for making my browsing here that little bit more cheerful and creative

I know how that feels. I make either wholesome fanart or I share my ideas, always something in the description.
I am iffy with the thought of my (really old)Β Fiona! fanart in a fave gallery folder that's a bit more... lewd, even though my art isn't meant to be lewd, and my thought process when putting effort into the art and desccription isn't innuendoy either.

I really like that you do what you do and that it's not what so many other people are doing.
I can't relate to your characters in terms of having a mom who's a professional underwater photographer or anything like that. But your art does remind me of all the times I went swimming and this or that friend's pool (lots of kids I knew had them in their backyards, I did not grow up in a rich area, this was just a feature of 90s Midwestern life), swimming in lakes, the time I took a shower with my friend's sister because we'd somehow gotten completely covered with freshly cut grass outside (we were fully clothed the whole time... nevertheless, it's such a bizarre and amazing thing to look back on).
I remember going to a graduation party and seeing a couple kids in the pool with their clothes on. I thought about jumping in myself but didn't... now and then I regret that choice because I didn't realize at the time that it was the end of a part of my life where I wouldn't have the chance to do that again (and even if I did, it wouldn't mean the same thing at all).

Have you ever tried drawing the light reflections over the characters, or does it look kind of weird?

I agree with you 100%. Even though I have dabbled some more mature elements of underwater, there's nothing wrong at all with more wholesome underwater stories.
That's why I wrote One Breath- a story that involved me taking underwater scenes- something I'm passionate about, and turn it into a unique, wholesome, adventurous story that pretty much anyone can enjoy!Β
I think that's my favourite part of the underwater community: there's room for everything and everyone: the oceans a big place, and if you want to hold your breath forever, then hold your breath for-friggin-ever. >:3

I share your opinion, my drawings focus more on artistic horror than on anything else (from my point of view) but at the same time I have that dichotomy of knowing what the real intention of those who ask me for commissions and really understand my art, the respect and I love that you like my art but at the same time I would like you to ask me for other types of drawings :/

You were one of the first underwater artist Iβve ever seen and Iβm so happy you make the content you that you do and it really is such a fresh air to see genuine Wholesome underwater content thatβs made by good people
Iβve had the dishonor to meet some not so nice people in this community and later found out some of the people I know arenβt that nice, the person who made that Samus pic you mentioned? Heβs not a good person he makes creepy art on the side on a different site felt disgusted especially since I had commissioned the dude sometimes ago....honestly seeing this stuff can really put a toll on someone and honestly I thank you for making this wholesome content π

You know I can't help but feel like agreeing to this too! Some R rated material is fine, but when its all you see, it really deters for what makes underwater scenes so appealing
I also wanna say that I've been following you for some time, reading some of your comic strips and you've really had me inspired to do so much with my work.
I hope in the long run you'll still be doing this cause you really got talent that my makes me envious of you X3

Endearingly bubbly work, as usual.
I fully agree with your thoughts on this. Wholesome and fun underwater art is a dime a dozen, which is why I've made it my primary focus.
It's always a joy to see and do, which is why I'm ultimately glad you were the first person to greet me into this watery community ~
