Description For a while this past year, I got really into the world and the characters of the Mario games, mostly thanks to having the Game Grumps' Mario playthroughs on in the background while I drew my comics. That got me thinking - people talk a lot about what it'd take to make a good Mario movie. Obviously you'd want to steer clear of any of the bizarre, grungy territory trod by the 1993 live-action one, but is it even possible to develop a coherent cinematic story out of characters who only run and jump? Well, if you've ever read Nintendo Power's Mario comics from the early '90s, you know that it absolutely is possible

I think a story like that would make a great jumping-off point for an animated film - you've got distinct character-driven interplay between Mario and Luigi, you've got Peach being a total badass, you've got a Bowser that's actually kind of sympathetic but still clearly a jerk, you've got a lot of good stuff that would make for a fun experience. I know Nintendo is notoriously touchy about licensing its properties for non-video game media these days, but heck, it's still fun to dream. And to draw mock-up movie posters.

Listen up, Jesse... I’m not the only one who’s come up with this kind of idea! Believe me, I’ve been using this site to showcase an alternate Mario media concept of my own. This production is also supposed to be from Hollywood, but it’s not a single movie ― rather, my concept is an animated television series. A lot of people in the Mario fan community remember that DiC Entertainment, the company that brought us characters like Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff the cat and Captain Planet, created three Mario cartoon shows in the early ’90s that were all short-lived and ended up falling into obscurity. My Mario TV show, however, is nothing like those programs.

The Mario spin-off I’ve created here is The All-New Super Mario Super Extravaganza!, an animated comedy/drama series that focuses on the life and adventures of the world’s greatest gaming hero as he attempts to deal with an ongoing conflict between the Mushroom Kingdom and its evil-driven rival nation, the Koopa Kingdom. The Mushroom Kingdom itself is presented as the superpower of its planet, known as the “Mushroom World,” and is constantly at odds with the Koopa Kingdom, which makes many attempts to invade the MK and torment its inhabitants, with the goal of unseating it from its post as the chief nation of the Mushroom World and taking over dominion of the planet for itself. Princess Peach, who is at the helm of this tranquil yet troubled domain, has her identity overhauled, transforming from a helpless damsel to a competent, caring, and defensive world leader who, whenever Bowser and his maniacal Koopa Troop trespass into her kingdom’s borders to strike it, sends Mario out on missions to combat the Koopas (and in many cases, rescue MK citizens they have kidnapped or reclaim property they have stolen or seized), either making him work alone (with his brother Luigi as his sidekick) or with her kingdom’s armed forces and/or a defense agent. Very rarely is Peach kidnapped in the Koopa invasions in this series. Some episodes, meanwhile, would take Mario out of the spotlight briefly and focus on an adventure of a character other than him. Overall, there would be a lot of comedic, humorous, and exciting moments to make the show a worthwhile and downright fun experience.
The show is to be entirely computer-animated, using traditional style for the characters and CGI style for everything else, and features an epic orchestral soundtrack that includes remastered and rearranged versions of many of the original video game compositions.
I believe that as the world’s most acclaimed and successful video game franchise, Mario would need to be given very special treatment for its transition from one medium to another. Because of this, the show is intended to outdo most productions in television animation, and be produced by Warner Bros. Animation with collaboration from Amblin Entertainment, Nelvana, and Universal Animation Studios. As such, the show gets its manpower primarily from individuals who worked on Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, various Looney Tunes productions, shows involving DC Comics superheroes, and movies like The Land Before Time and An American Tail; with writing and animation support coming from individuals who worked on certain Nelvana programs, like Spliced on Teletoon/Qubo. The all-star voice cast, consisting of nearly every big name in U.S. cartoon voice acting today and various TV and film celebrities, is led by the famed voice of Mario, Charles Martinet. Even a few of the major figures in Mario franchise development are on hand to provide supervision and coordination for the series.

I have a complete script on hand for one episode, with illustrations; you can see it here .

Nintendo did reveal last year that they wanted to start producing CGI movies based on their games (cause if you want something done right you got to do it yourself I suppose), so this might actually be a possibility.

Would you believe Nintendo is actually working with Ubisooft for a turn based strategy crossover with the Rabbids?

The Super Mario Adventures comic series informed a lot of my own comedic sensibilities; if Nintendo ever wanted a continuation of the same feel, I've got four scripts ready to roll. You've done a great job capturing that here. Active Protagonist Peach is Best Peach!

Yeah, I've been looking at some of this year's Sketch Dump and realizing that a lot of these would look way better as finished pieces. This is definitely one of them.

Well with Nintendo recently getting ready to do movies based on their games (Thank you, Wreck-It Ralph), your little idea just might come true.

Actually, I've been pondering a Super Mario Cinematic Film Series for a while now. I've had about six or seven Mario movies planned, and the many possible stories to tell with each Mario movie. I even made a poll about which one people would be most excited to see.

While I know there are Super Mario comics that tell a story with the characters, my take on a Mario movie would be rather different, steering away from the comics. Not to mention I thought about working in ACTUAL PLUMBING in the film (which, to the 1993 movie's credit, they did include into the story, so there's that).

I even planned some Mario films where another character would take the spotlight, not focusing on Mario as much.

And for every movie adaptation of a Mario video game, I might change some elements around to make it more story-coherent and surprising for the audience.

There's this one artist on DA who made some really great Mario movie fan-art, in the style of Don Bluth. kosperry.deviantart.com/galler…

As neat as what I think you intended for this drawing to be, it's a little hard to see it. >~<
