It was hard to think up a scene for Marge at first, since even the writers admit that she's kind of a bland character. How do you devise an interesting underwater scenario for a "spineless, potato-cooking housewife" (see 5F06 "Realty Bites") who "spends 23 hours a day" at home (see 3F07 "Marge Be Not Proud")? Well, with my nerd-like knowledge of everything related to "The Simpsons", I recalled the not-entirely classic episode DABF18 "Large Marge", wherein Marge's accidental breast implants secure her a job as a spokesmodel at various trade shows. The whole thing snowballed from there.There's actually a few other things at work here, too. The underwater kitchen is inspired by a recent ad campaign for Bounty paper towels, but the coffeepot is inspired by a long-lost kitchenware commercial from the 1960s that nobody in the underwater photography circles has been able to locate in years. But hey, no pop culture reference is too obscure for "The Simpsons"...

when I first saw this, I was thinking of "Time and Punishment", a segment from the 5th Treehouse of Horror. During the part near the end where they speed things up and quickly shift through some of the bizarre present periods that Homer accidentally created, one of them depicted Springfield underwater.

With all these pop cultures, I'm kinda surprised you didn't use any for Family Guy
Seriously, it's rather cool how you've included tiny refs vere and making good use of Marge, despite how bland anyone thinks her. I can probably imagine her hair completely undone and snaking out like some kinda octopus. Actually puts me in mind of Homer's underwater home in "Homer Badman" (Episode 2F06).
And yes, I sadly watched the "Large Marge" episode. Weird thing was it edited out scenes that were shown in a commercial advertising it.

A lot of times, the network promos for new episodes are put together before the last-minute edits are made to the show, so they occasionally feature lines and scenes that don't appear in the final cut. Actually, with "The Simpsons", it happens with alarming frequency.

Looks grand, even with the slightest obscure references. I'm now reminded of this line for some reason:

That reminds me. What, exactly IS sexy about Marge? I know a lot of guys think she's hot, but I don't get it. As you pointed out, she's pretty bland. Not to mention the raspy voice. She's definitely longsuffering and forgiving, but I see that more as a motherly thing than a sexy thing.

I think there are a few aspects at work. As they've pointed out on a few DVD commentaries (namely 2F07 "Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy" and 2F21 "The Springfield Connection"), she's got an amazingly good body for a mother of three. And there's also the fact that she's able to accept a person for who they really are, which is why she still loves Homer in spite of all the lunkheaded things he does - I imagine a lot of guys like that kind of loving quality in a woman.
It's hard to explain, since I'm not personally attracted to her either, but I can only guess that this is the line of thinking behind it.

I was thinking of the episode where Homer flooded the entire town as an artistic statement, until I noticed how well-endowed she was. Heh.
And, since you're like, 3 for 3 insofar as Fox series programming goes, are there any plans to do any of the women from King of the Hill?

It's a possibility, although I don't watch "King of the Hill" quite as much as the other three (perhaps I could consult with for reference - he seems to know a lot about how to work with those characters).

Wow, I'm particularlly impressed with this picture. You've shown good apitute drawing the Simpsons and the effect is not lost here. I particularlly like the smaller details in the background like the various items floating here and about.
If I can be a knit-picker though, there are a few places where the lining in the background isn't as steady in certain places as others. The shelving, windows etc are nice and sharp, but the outlines around the sink's rims or the washing machine's control panel are still a little shaky. Sorry, just a stickler for details like that.
Otherwise, I wonder if you could pass this off as a still from an unseen episode (and given the nature of the show it wouldn't be too far fetch, perhaps a dream sequence of Homer coming back to his inexplicidly underwater home after a rough day of working on a submarine... if he didn't do that already)
