Description
So uh, yeah. This is Dr. Ivo Robotnik. In the classic Sonic games he was always the main antagonist and was always the final boss of each game. But now days it seems like you think he's going to be the final boss, but then near the end some big-ass, dark, ancient, monster-thing comes out who is the "real threat". This pisses me off a bit because it seems like Robotnik's never had a complete villian role in a game since Sonic 3 & Knuckles! Yes, I said, "ROBOTNIK". Not any of this "Eggman" crap, infact Eggman sounds more like a Megaman villian if you ask me.lolDr.Robotnik Β© SEGA

Actually the term Eggman was though up first, and was used over in Japan since sonic 1
The name Robotnik was created to "localize" his name for Americans. (also why we got "Tails" instead of "miles prower" before the two melded just before release of sonic 2)
And yes, to a degree, I must concur with you. RobotnikΒ is never the main threat anymore, but you can't tell the same story over and over again unless you want to go along the same trend as the Mario Bros Series. the new villans did add flair at first, and in SA2, I think it was a good idea to have the final hazard, but using it again in 06 and unleashed was kinda meh.Β
Sonic X (show), When Sonic goes to fight another force of evil, and Amy insists on helping, Sonic says "This isn't Eggman we're dealing with." As if Robotnik/Eggman lost his charm as the bad guy, and they are just rivals.Β
I never minded them just being rivals and actually caring for each other deep down, but I know it upsets some people so I dunno what to really say about it.

I don't mind the term 'Eggman' as like an insult. It's just when HE himself starts calling himself that and takes it seriously is what kinda turns me.. Besides, Sonic as a whole is more popular in America than Japan. So I'm not really sure why 'Robotnik' never caught on.
But with Mario with Bowser, yes he's mostly always the main bad guy. But the real problem is he does the EXACT same thing in almost all of the games he's the villain in, kidnap the princess.
Dr. Robotnik at least has a little diversity in his plans. Example: Turning all the animals into robotic badniks, ripping off Star Wars to concur the world, chaining up and taking over a small planet with time travel, or using an ancient water god to destroy the city.(which in the end backfires on him, but that's not the point!)
But even if it was the same like that, it really shouldn't matter. Sonic is a video game platforming series, it's main focus is gameplay.

Actually the same thing happened to me, I was called "BLink" and at first I didn't like that nickname, but I just accepted it, and actually now I really like it. And without the Eggman, we wouldn't have the awesome theme song.
*agrees*
Okay, this is where I have to disagree strongly. Sonic has been, for me at least, all about the alt media. The Comics, TV series, and Music. The Games up to Sonic adventure 2 were awesome. but after that, the kinda went downhill with the exception of 06 (I'll explain a little later) and The Black Knight.
In Sonic 1-3k were great platforming games, and fill me with memories of my early childhood. even Sonic 3k had a very basic plot with actual cut-scenes involved and even an alt ending if you got the chaos/super emeralds. THESE games were all about the gameplay.Β
Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2, they were very story driven in my opinion. SA2 was the first game I really played outside a Mario game and I was deeply involved in the story because I had never seen an actual story develop in a game before, Β wanted to know about Shadow, this space colony, Β and "Β Β AH HALF THE MOON JUST BLEW UP!!!" Β
Don't get me wrong, these games also had great gameplay, (actually just a few hours ago I put another hour into SA2 earlier today trying to get more of the 180 emblems)Β
Same story pretty much for Sonic Adventure, except I didn't play it until about 8 years later when I got a copy on steam.Β
Now, these games had 2 things the modern games don't posses, good music, and good story. good music sticks with you a lot longer then gameplay, gameplay is just in the moment. but music can stay and actually remind you of the gameplay, so they go hand in hand to a degree.
Now, I haven't played Heroes, or Shadow, or even 06, but I have heard a lot about 06.Β
06 was full of wasted potential, the only good thing that's salvageable out of it is really the theme songs. (and they were pretty blasted good imo).
actually I won't explain 06 right now, maybe if the conversation drifts in that way, but to much to put here.Β
Basically outside Unleashed daytime and Black knight and possibly colours and generations, the Gameplay pretty much sucks for modern games.Β
After exploring this stuff, I started looking into the alt media such as the comics and the TV shows.Β
boy, did I find waaaay more then I bargained for. The Story for the Comic series (running issue#262 this month) is to say the least, in depth.Β
Also Sonic X, THE best thing that ever happened to the Sonic series. If you were to watch the Japanese version, it has a lot of depth to it, and man I mean a lot of depth, especially in Season 3's finale.
Sorry that was so long...
tl;dr
The games went to pot in 2006, set aside 06's half salvageable plot. I find the music and alt media much more interesting/better.

. . . . . .Then I guess we're on two completely different planets.Β
I'm a man who's all about simplicity. Plus, I never really take the Sonic series seriously anymore to be honest.

I guess.Β
And I totally respect that.
I like complicated, well thought out stuff myself, it's a personality trait I guess.
btw, what program did you use to make that picture?

I prefer calling him Robotnik because that is his real name, according to Yuji Naka. "Eggman" is a nickname taken after his egg-shaped body. He and Miles Prower are the only two Sonic characters I know who go by their nicknames instead of their real names.

to be honest i like both names but i prefer Robotnik it sounds more villain like(plus it's ALOT easier to take seriously)

Did you knowthat Dr. Robotnik was ALWAYS known as Eggman? Or, at least in Japan, they changed his name to Robitnik in America. And he has been the main antagonist in alot of Modern games, (i.e. The Advance Series, Sonic Colors, Generations, I...think Sonic Rush)

Jdoesstuff In reply to Impossible123 [2012-02-08 03:07:57 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I know that. Though personally, I don't care if only Sonic calls him Eggman and everyone else calls him Robotnik. I mean it would make a bit more sense since Sonic always was the teasing type.

I personlly like that he is the prefinal boss in most games since there villains in Sonic game's that are more epic then him.
I am not saying that I hate Eggman by all means as I do really like him but him being a prefinal boss is cool.

Jdoesstuff In reply to 4ATOMIC4 [2011-07-03 13:39:22 +0000 UTC]
But if he's not the main final villian, then what's the point of him being there?

4ATOMIC4 In reply to Jdoesstuff [2011-07-03 22:32:57 +0000 UTC]
Because Eggman is a interseting character and the reason for how the story's came to be.

Well, if he's the one who released the monster in the first place, don't you think it should be the other way around? Fight the monster and then Robotnik?

But the monster is more awesome then Eggman.

Interesting trivia, at one point he was a walrus in pajamas. I'm not sure if that was before or after the Theodore Roosevelt in PJ's though. But yeah, I totally agree that Eggman does nothing... Robotnik is the real threat. lol

Yeah, I don't care if like Sonic calls him Eggman as an insult. But in a serious matter or by anyone else I think it should be Robotnik.

I think it's weird how in Sonic Adventure 1 Sonic calls him Eggman and he says "Silence! My name is Dr. Robotnik!" and then in Sonic Adventure 2 He announces to the world "My name is Dr. Eggman!"
