Description
Based on the Special Stages from Sonic 1. The Special Zone is where Sonic usually gets the chaos emeralds from. I heard that the idea came when Yuji Naka(Sonic's creator) went to Rome and ate a poisoned piece of pizza and basically had one wild trip. He saw birds and clouds that turned into fish and bubbles.O_OI think this piece looks very colorful, but I don't feel like I put enough detail in the BG.

God, these special stages hate me. I can have several clear shots at the emerald, then Bam! I loose.
But anyways, it looks great! Very nostalgic-like.

I find it amazing how some of the greatest videogames out there began from the craziest (and sometimes seemingly completely irrelevant) inspirations. Take the Mother series, for example.
