Description
This is the oldest painting I've uploaded so far, and it was one of my forays into more science fiction-related stuff. I really enjoyed painting this one, and it's still one of my favourites.Related content

Thanks, I can see this suiting a Tales from the Crypt story. "It Came From the Pipes"... That said, this is an older painting. Probably almost two years old, while the others I uploaded are all from the last 3 months. There are a lot of things I'd change about this, many of which have been pointed out here by the sharp-eyed. I do like the very dark atmosphere though, and I like the fact that a lot of people don't notice the mer-men at first glance.

Yeah, I was also disturbed by the backpack straps at first, but then again it doesn't really take away from the scene or atmosphere, so it's really a minor flaw.
I especially like the little eyes in the background, which first caught me. They really make the image creepier. Only when I turned up the brightness in Photoshop I noticed those eyes have matching bodies. If you want know what I would do: I'd make those guys a bit lighter to show a bit more of them (I found that pulling up the brightness by 10 did a nice job without making the image too light). That would definately give the piece a much stronger atmosphere and a new twist.

nice lighting on this piece.. which is the most important part of it.
the body is a bit out of balance but... the shadows and lighting is what should be looked at most.

This is nicely done and the shadows, as has already been said, are superb.
At first, I was thinking the man's face was maybe a bit too expressionless. But after more consideration, I think his expression is suitable for the scene. He's entered an unfamiliar environment, and his expression is that of concentration.
Another thing I noticed is the position of his left leg. The eye follows the shadow that lays over the ripple as a straight line leading to his hip. So it appears that both legs are extended straight - too stiff of a position for capturing a single moment in time. But honestly, its only a little detail and does nothing to detract from this great painting. You did an excellent job on this and I can see why it is a favorite.

This is very well done! The detail is great!
Like others have said, this would be good on the cover of a book! Jeff, How about writing a horror story to go with it!

pretty damned awesesome. I like the rendering style. It made me think of a novel cover as well
The shading, as marc said, is awesome. Very very well done on that aspect.
Something strange about this though is that the backpack straps seem to stop at the chest.
vedy vedy good !

This would look cool on a science fiction novel cover. Or a computer game. The figures in the back are eerie.
