Yup, ceramic
The white porcelain-clay is really cool when finished naturally.

Were the black veins painted in or a natural occurence?

The black markings are hair and sawdust that Jeff throws onto the piece as cools down in the kiln So basically it's carbon deposit.

Ah! Like in the Raku technique? throwing metal shavings, sawdust and such at different temps to affect the finish? We used to use shredded paper for a good effect in school. I am in Korea now which has a rich history in ceramics with their Celadon(jade green-ish) industry. I have yet to find a class in English, but I am still looking.

Well: Jeff works in completely different temperatures, and without glaze. So he actually opens the kiln and sprinkles directly onto the pieces.
Good luck finding that class!

I see! Yeah, it will be difficult. I am in Rural Korea, less English is spoken here, so... but it is the region with the ceramics industry.
