Description Due to Varangian Guard’s focus as a mercenary corporation being on garrison operations more than offensive fleet ops, one of the more common vessels seen in their fleet is the Drakkar-class transport. More than a mere troop carrier, a pair of these vessels can deploy an entire FOB (Forward Operating Base), including structures, perimeter towers, shield generators, barracks, DFac (dining facility), and the thousands of mercenaries and vehicles to man it in under four hours.
This phenomenal capability to jump in, hit dirtside and secure an operating base and LZ in just a few hours is what has led to Varangian Guard’s popularity. As such, these vessels are in high demand by other clients, and Varangian has made more money selling the Drakkar than any other vessel in their fleet.
Named after one of the largest classes of Viking longships, the Drakkar looks completely different unloaded than when carrying her cargo. The Drakkar is a scrawny waif of a ship without the modules maglocked to her hull, giving an indication of just how much she can carry
The Drakkar shown is carrying one half of a FOB. From bow to stern it is carrying the following on each side- one quarter of the circular command-and-control center that will be the base’s operating hub, one of four perimeter towers with integral shield generators, heavy and point-defense cannons, and missile batteries (shown here configured to defend the vessel on approach), three cargo modules containing troops, battlewalkers, vehicles, supplies, and general cargo, one of four fortified 2,500-man habitat module under the wing, and one of two dining facility modules in the rear. The companion ship will be carrying admin buildings and motor pool facilities in their place.
The Drakkar is neither weak nor frail. Eight heavy APPC turrets- four dorsal and four ventral- give it firepower rivaling a conventional destroyer-class vessel. Due to the modules attached to it, however, the Drakkar has very few point-defense turrets and no intermediate firepower, merely the big guns. This may seem like a design flaw or contradiction, but it was actually intentional. Carrying such heavy firepower means that the Drakkar does not require a destroyer escort, as it can dish out continent-busting abuse all on its own. It is vulnerable to fighters and smaller vessels, however, which alters the nature of the required escort.
Rather than deploying a handful of expensive destroyers to protect these transports, a squadron of four to six Valkyrie corvettes is sent to provide anti-fighter and close-quarters defense. As the Valkyrie is the mainstay of the Varangian Guard fleet, this gives them an edge over conventional ops planners.

(also can give the numbers of how many troops, and vehicles it can carry)

Welp... its not exactly a 40k thunder hawk but if you can think it up, I can draw it.

When I saw this massive starship offloading walkers, tanks, and supply vehicles, the Imperial March started playing in my head. Crisp, beautiful line work, and lots of delicious detail. Great work!

cool, i had a very similar carrier design in my head, but the stepped effect you got going on, is where the ships where launched from

Jepray In reply to xxVectorZeroxx [2011-05-18 03:00:39 +0000 UTC]

yeah, those steps are modules that can be detached from the main hull... one of these days i'll have to draw this thing with out cargo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xxVectorZeroxx In reply to Jepray [2011-05-18 03:43:17 +0000 UTC]

oh thats clever actually. i can see how it works. actually. i also figured out a clever design for moving cargo from planets to space. unfinished design actually, never thought it good enough for public show. i suck at drawing.

yeah i hope ... currently i draw abstractly, looks lik a bunch of horribly missalined shapes trying to become something, i just dont think im creative enough. they end up becoming 3d well enough tho. still no where near the quality of your average 3d modeler. look in my gallery at the Grendel designs. two handrawn and one 3d.

I feel that though the hull in the middle is a little slanted, (see wings and then the hull, or back and then rest of hull). But im not sure, not big on perspective XD

I like the part where the other team gets owned.

Jepray In reply to Mrkirby2 [2011-01-07 03:46:19 +0000 UTC]

the whole hull tapers down and the wings kinda droop down also from the back center hull...its supposed to look like that

Breandan-OCiarrai In reply to YouCannotFalter [2011-01-04 07:08:45 +0000 UTC]

This ship is a transport for Varangian Guard, a mercenary corporation specializing in garrison fleets and ground operations. Generally when invading a planet, the SOP is to send SpecOps in first to neutralize key planetary defenses, then do a tiered assault with heavy warships engaging defense fleets, lighter ships (frigates and corvettes) engaging defense orbitals and ground-based defenses not already neutralized with precision strikes, then hot-jump (opening a jump point in the upper atmosphere, very dangerous) these transports and their escorts in-system so fast, any remaining defense grid weapon systems would have a helluva time tracking them. Within an hour of being dirtside they've already offloaded, constructed the perimeter defense towers and shield wall, and have secured an LZ. All without wiping out entire cities and getting bad press

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Jepray In reply to YouCannotFalter [2011-01-03 22:02:10 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't have to be bombed first, two of these transports can drop a fortress base on solid ground in a matter of minutes if need be, a few hours after drop it would be assembled and ready for action... or a ready made base can be dropped from a single ship into a hot LZ... but yeah a slower dismount would mean its in a secure LZ

Could you use this as a reference point for future images? A size reference point? because if you had not put the ground units, I would have assumed this was similar in size to a frigate or destroyer.

hmm yeah i will need to leave some kinda reference item on the page huh?... K will try to add more sized items...

Hellstorm888 [2010-12-31 18:41:56 +0000 UTC]

I can haz? This would be awesome at the core of a fleet. Get it down on a planet and watch the fireworks as a horde of tanks offload themselves =3 Kinda wish I had the art skills to contribute to the setting myself. I know what its like to feel overwhelmed with a setting
