Description Among the first jump-capable warships, the Hobart-Class destroyer was the pride of the Oceanic Federation's fleet. The first one rolled off the New Perth orbital shipyards in 2102, and the class served with distinction until replaced by the Artemis-Class in 2140 after the development of more stable and effective artificial gravity. The Hobart was one of the last warships in the field that retained the use of rotational gravitaty living quarters. Due to the power requirements of the early artifical gravity systems developed at the end of the 21st century, it was impossible to power the lasers and Gauss cannons while maintaining gravity. Since naval combat at that time often lasted days, crews would rotate through the gravitational sections for rest to prevent physiological degradation.
Armed with three double-barrel 450mm railgun cannons and eight potent pulse laser emitters, the Hobart's most potent offensive weapon was the 2,500mm heavy Gauss cannon spinal mount. As one of the handful of superpowers that rose out of the ashes of the Fall in the first half of the 21st century, the Oceanic Federation had established substantial industrial and mining operations throughout the Sol system, and was among the first nations to settle the newly-discovered habitable worlds in nearby systems as jump technology evolved in 2085. Many nations squabbled for mining and settlement rights, with such squabbles coming to blows more often than not. To protect their colonial expeditions, no less than six Hobart-class destroyers and eight Nichols-class frigates would escort every colony ship to provide the backbone of a colonial defense fleet.
Several Hobart-class vessels still remain in private collections, the Smithsonian Aerospace Museum orbital above Terra, and in the Australio-Pacifica Coalition- the nation the Oceanic Federation eventually evolved into- at the Museum of Naval Technology in the Dunedan orbital above Ganelon.

About 150m (495') long. As for the lasers, if you look on the flanks, stern and bow, you will see a low-profile turret with a window instead of a barrel. Those are the port/starboard/ventral/dorsal laser emitters. The two spinal mount emitters in the bow are flanking the Gauss cannon port.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

korblborp In reply to Breandan-OCiarrai [2011-06-23 23:32:37 +0000 UTC]

i suspected those windowed turrets were some of the LASERs, but they could just as easily have been sensor blisters or something.. and two flanking the Gauss cannon (rail or coil gun?).. that's six. description says eight...

does that length include the weird flap things at the end?

2) There are two cross-spinal lasers just below and aft of the midship railgun turret

well if you factor in the shear distances involved in a space battle at this tech level, unless the other guys asleep it would be very very hard to aim and land a round on the hab unit, cause your a few hundred kilometers away and the hab section is Spinning on the ship so it only occupies a spot for only a few seconds at a time...its like trying to hit a propeller blade from an idling plane from across the runway...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheCH In reply to Jepray [2011-06-18 17:40:15 +0000 UTC]

I know, but still the spinner is the weak link in an impact to the ship.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Jepray In reply to TheCH [2011-06-19 02:11:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is the main part of the ship with people in it but it is armored enough to withstand micro meteor impacts and proof against most laser systems, all but a direct hit, and its up to the crew to make that as hard as possible. Honestly, all ships will have some form of weak spot, no matter how heavily armored and armed it is. Look at the Death star
play it as it comes, hope no one hits the hab module while your in it and get them before they get you

true, but two or three Gauss cannon his will generally destroy the ship as a whole, so weak points are more or less moot. It's more of a game of don't-get-hit-or-die than how-much-damage-can-I-take-and-where

Nukes are basically worthless in space, though. Β  The fireball and shockwave do almost all the damage. Β Space = no atmosphere. Β  No atmosphere = no fireball, no shockwave. Β Β

It would still do some damage in space, but only a tiny amount compared to what it would do on a planet. Β  Β

It looks like those tanks near the thrusters would be a structural weak point. Hit them hard enough and you could cut a chunk of the ship off. Still looks like a good design for an early ship.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jepray In reply to Asurite [2011-06-14 20:11:40 +0000 UTC]

Honestly any kinetic round would cause havoc to one of these ships. Hit it anywhere hard enough and you will first squash the hull then tear it in half... The Reaction mass holding tanks and the smaller hydrogen storage tanks are meant to be exposed, baring spending the mass trying to cover them only to have gauss rounds pop though and then having the side effect of the now blown tank blowing a larger hole in the hull... Spend less mass reinforcing the tunnel that links the reactor to the hull and just pray they won't hit the hydrogen tanks...

Thanks

Asurite In reply to Jepray [2011-06-15 06:58:41 +0000 UTC]

Wait. . . If this thing has such weak armor and a quite visible weak spot, how is it that Naval battles lasted days at a time? Were shield just that dang good or were weapons really really inaccurate? I' think I would have trouble sleeping if I knew that the ship I was on could easily be destroy'd.

Breandan-OCiarrai In reply to Asurite [2011-06-15 07:31:13 +0000 UTC]

This is one of a serious of "historical" ships from the Dark Nova universe, and is a LOT more primitive than the current tech of the setting. This is a warship from less than a hundred years from now. It takes hours to line the shuttle or a Soyuz capsule up with a docking collar just a few meters away, trying to hit a relatively small ship (150m or less generally) with a projectile only 18" in diameter at a distance of tens of thousands of kilometers is a SERIOUSLY difficult task.

With ships trying to line up shots on targets that were too distant to see without magnification, it took time to calculate the trajectory of the vessel, lock on, and fire. Lasers were almost guaranteed hits, but weak overall. Gauss weapons were powerful, but slow (relatively speaking, compared to light-speed lasers) projectiles that could be detected by radar, allowing for evasive actions. Then, the game would begin again.

Shields didn't exist at this stage of development, so the armour was a ceramic composite layered with carbon fiber ablative material. It could take a few hits from the smaller railguns (the big Gauss cannons like the spinal mount on this one would punch clean through the ship), and absorb a lot of abuse from the lasers, but the more mass the ship had, the harder it was to maneuver.

The fuel in those tanks is water, plain old H20. Shooting it won't blow it up, just cause it to leak. The hydrogen storage cells for the actual deuterium processing are inside the ship proper, and protected. Even with that, the tanks are still relatively armoured, though less than the whole of the ship. So, you wouldn't lose any sleep over going boom from the tanks, just smelly roommates in close quarters
