Nice tutorial (especially the food moments xD I'm all about food breaks xD), but to be honest the water doesn't need to be hot or even warm : ) Rolling goes just as well with cold water and you don't hurt your fingers : D
You've also said you would like to see dreads if someone makes them.
So... I do : ) Check them out, if you want : )

great tutoral but i would just ask about how to wash them and put then in your hair ?

JesseJay In reply to Missetatkissin [2011-07-14 15:49:09 +0000 UTC]
To wash them I simply rinse mine in luke warm soapy water for a few minutes, then palm roll again to make sure they maintain their shape, then leave to dry for a day or two.
To put them in your hair they have to be braided in, just like doing a normal braid but instead of using three strands of hair use 2 and then substitute for the dread, finish off the braid with a mini elastic to secure.

Thank you for making this! I have been trying to figure out for a while just how to make wool dreads.
Your tutorial is awesome!
The net has some good word based instructions... but for me, I need pictures to show me what I need to do.
Loved the random little comments.
And BTW I <3 your pants!

Haha x3 I also need pictures to learn what I have to do, otherwise I just get lost 3:
Thank you for your comment and if you make some dreads show me them :3 I haven't made any wool dreads in a while, but I'm currently making some kanekalon dreads, in black and blonde. I hope they come out good!
(I loved those pants, sadly they ripped at the crotch one day xD)
Sorry for the late reply! College gets very time consuming D:

Nice felting techniques, I think these can be used for more than dreads. But do you rinse the soap out? I can't imagine handing something full of waxy slimy dried soap. XD

JesseJay In reply to Fury-From-Above [2009-12-29 17:30:19 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. I don't rinse the soap out as I do the felting itself, but they don't feel waxy at all when they are dry. If any soap is left on them, it would get washed out when I dye them and the dye leftovers get washed out. They are really soft when finished xD
Hey wait. I think I know you from subeta! XD -hides in corner-

I have to ask, what are "double ended dreads" for? All I can think of when I see "dreads" is "dreadlocks" and I rather doubt that's what this is.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MsKakyou In reply to Jaaku-san [2010-11-28 05:03:34 +0000 UTC]
A double ended dread is a dread that is double the desired length of the dread that you want to install in your hair. When you go to install them you fold the dread in half, then braid one of the halves in your hair. They give a fuller, being that there is double the amount of dreads that you installed into your hair.

JesseJay In reply to corvus-crux [2009-05-28 11:23:52 +0000 UTC]
I make some synthetic too, only made one set as of yet cause I don't like the feel of them and they are really heavy for a full head >.<
I hand dye too, I use a mix of dylon dyes for my colours, my hands come out tiedyed!
I use a soap from the local shop around the corner from me, seems to be working fine. It's called Cussons, on the box it says pure and mild but it really isn't xD
Leaves your hands really dry so you might want to get some good moisturiser for them.
Heres some company info to point you in the right direction;
This product is actually made in Australia by:-
PZ Cussons Australia Pty Ltd
ACN 004 164 827
282 - 300 Hammond Road
Dandenong
Victoria 3175
The UK importer is:-
Lakeside foods
UK
RM20 3NE
If you cannot find any where you live, I'd be more than happy to mail you a few bars over for postage prices.

XD awwww! try tea based dyes ... its all natural good for the enviorment stains like a mofo but the only down side is that vibrant neons are a little bit dulled so thats where the synthetics rear there mean lil heads XP

soooo, this may be a stupid question, but what do you do with the dreads when you are done?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JesseJay In reply to kbell2988 [2009-04-15 23:10:38 +0000 UTC]
You braid them into your hair, or a wig, or make them into falls which you tie into your hair.

Hey, thanks so much for this tutorial! I've been looking into making my own dreads, and wanted to know how to make this kind. I don't know anything about this sort of wool... I just thought people used plain wool from the store, lol.
Any idea where to find this stuff in Adelaide, Australia? Or what I should type in google to find out? Thanks!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JesseJay In reply to EllaNixonPhotography [2009-01-16 20:03:25 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the comment ^.^
Yeah, it took me a while to figure out, which wool, where from, how thick, how long to leave in water XD If you go ahead with this project feel free to mail me anytime for advice x3
I think my supplier may be able to post to Australia, I could call them up and ask if you want me to? This supplier is very good because the wool comes cleaned, brushed and in the the shape you need.
But if you do want this from Australia I would say you should google 'Wool tops/Wool Roving' but make sure to get the wool which has been washed, brushed etc.
Also I think Ecru is only in europe (You might be able to find otherwise, I could be wrong) and if you do find it, it may turn out rather expensive, I buy in bulk 800grams+ (400grams - full head of 60)
So yeah, if you can find a good supplier in Australia that's great ^.^ if not just tell me and I'll speak to my supplier about postage and such. That good with you?

Haha, nevermind. My boyfriend was just arguing with me that the pH scale goes base to acid, so soap would have a /low/ pH. XD
It goes acid to base. >_>

Isn't it the other way around? Because I heard that the human stomach has a ph of 1 because it's highly acidic. I think it's best to look this stuff up yourself.
