Description THANKS FOR THE DD!! YOU GUYS ARE ALL AWESOME!

Literature Gallery: Chapters and Annotation Assignment

A brief sketch for an idea I had not long ago for the lit community.

I didn't go into anything on the submission side. More or less this is the presentation side one would see as they click on a Lit deviation.

I'm sure most of you don't know that I actually came to deviantART as a writer. It took a few years before I fell into what I'm doing here, now.

I've been meaning to re-upload some of my older work, and it occurred to me as I thought about doing so how entirely in need of help that whole process really is.

I hope this one is actually considered seriously. It could really improve our Lit system by leaps and bounds... and make it FUN to read again!!!

As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

omg, me too!!! It would really put the fun back in the lit-end of dA. I know I'd be more apt to re-post my writing if the system was better.

OH
MY
GOD.
This would fucking ROCK! Especially for some of my works, where peole have read some chapters and then tell me the story doesn't make sense! Eesh!

By the by, I'm sure you don't remember me, but I was on your team ages ago. Unfortunately life (read parents, writers block, last year at university, entrance exams, boyfriend trouble) collapsed on me at the last moment and I had to put dA on the back burner. I've managed to drag myself back now, though I'm busier than ever (only because I now have this semblance of control...ahem...) If you don't remember me, I -completely- understand, on the other hand, if you DO, then I have to apologise for running away like that. It all just happened =/ Good to see you putting up such awesome stuff though, btw. Keep it up!

(I'm lurking here more than you know )

Oh I remember you. I never forget a charming string of text.
Good to see you're doing well.

The DES team has been virtually inactive since around the time you left, and is currently under re-construction. Should be back up soon. After a couple more weeks, let me know if you're still interested in helping the DES, k? No hard feelings either way---it'll just make it easier to know if I have to fill a new slot right away or not.

Annnnnd THANK YOU for the compliment on my idea!

Charming? I was thinking more on the lines of mysterious, enigmatic, creepy even! Now lets not get carried away with my egomaniacal tendencies, lol.

How many more weeks is what I need to know before the DSE comes back up. Deal is I have my main entrance exam for this year on the 16th of November, and a string of university and entrance exams after that which are not equally important but important enough. Seeing as I'm taking time out for dA, I might actually be able to help! But could you ask me closer to the time when it comes back up? I'll probably only be able to answer you best then. If my main exam goes well, then -everything- else after should go well too

As for the compliment - it was obviously deserved xD I hope this gets DD'ed cause then it can be brought to the attention of the staff that has the power to bring about these kinds of improvements. That would just ROCK! *crows with delight*

Honestly I couldn't give you an exact date. It really depends on how long it takes me to finish up the few things I have left to do with it.
how about: I'll just keep your position solid... and when you come in sometime and notice the DES is up and active again, decide then how your time looks.

But yes, i'll ask you, too when it gets closer to time. I'll be making a check-in time for everyone. I need to find out who else's schedule has changed since then.

I support this! I don't upload lit but I do enjoy reading stuff on dA. It would be really cool to be able to fav chapter 1 of something and then be able to go back to it when new chapters are added, cause the writer would be able to submit new chapters are edits rather than as whole new deviations.

I definitely like the idea of chapters, especially if they can be named! I also find the slider intriguing, but it might get out of hand with some long pieces, which are well over 1000 lines. Perhaps a better solution would be two buttons: "Bookmark this line", and "Comment on this line". For bookmarking, this can be accomplished with some simple JavaScript and cookies (hell, it can be done in Greasemonkey). However, for annotations, the line number and comments will have to be stored in a database, and when the site is rendered, (graphical) indicators can be inserted at the ends of lines to show comments. Then all one has to do is click, and bam! annotations

If I get enough feedback I may be inspired to write a bookmarking script for Greasemonkey.

JesseLax In reply to kevind23 [2008-10-21 03:26:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, naming the chapters would be awesome.

But a quick adjustment to not being able to do it in a "flashy" way, would be for dA to enable heading commands (as they have available in subscriber journals and News Articles) in the text dialog. then we could just use a simple text heading in the top margin of our writing... not unlike when we write our manuscripts in our word processing programs.

I don't see any reason why the slider couldn't count that high. Perhaps the rough i have presented here doesn't look suitable for numbers that high, but I'm certain dA could quickly and studiously implement a way for it to track lines in that amount. but I do like your idea, too.
You should definitely make a bookmarking script! That would rock my sox!!!!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kevind23 In reply to JesseLax [2008-10-21 03:58:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, I understand the appeal of , x being the heading number of course, but it still doesn't do much. Since I've never really toyed with the literature functions here I don't know what HTML is allowed. As with the bookmarking function, if HTML is allowed it's simple enough to make a script that can help with chapters. Actually, any kind of special notation wold work (eg. Chapter #: Title, though Chapter #: Title seems more readable). So if I do get around to making a bookmarking script, I suppose I could include some sort of chaptering function, though it really depends on how each user sets it up.

The problem with the slider counting too high is that it would essentially get too big. The script would probably be laggy, and it wouldn't be entirely useful since you'd have to scroll down quite a few lines to get to where you want to be. Jumping to a particular line would either require a lot of extra HTML, or some sort of complicated math function which wouldn't be all that practical given the vast variety of fonts and sizes. So to be honest, I'm not really sure what your slider does, but I think your ideas could be accomplished in a much simpler fashion without a lot of extra work.

Crap! ..not only is it SERIOUS COMMON SENSE for prose ...but you presented the idea in a great easy to grasp format...

Jess for President ! :woot:..

( bit of a writer's fantasy going on with the number of comments tho ... ) ( however the cynicism of no favs is not lost either... )

It could even be implemented in poetry for a collection of poems that are all interconnected etc... ( if there's a formal name for that like triptych applies to visuals ...it escapes me at the moment )

Dude. It's Cicero. He was like one of Rome's greatest prose stylists and orators. If that guy can't get that many comments, who can!??!
but then, if you look at that versus the faves... it starts to feel more like dA. lmfao.

I always call them "Suites", but I just pulled that out of my ass from musical inspirations. Anyhoo, yeah! I was thinking the same thing.

I hope dA picks it up. I know myself for one would be more apt to post novel and short stories with a Chapter and Annotation system implemented.

=======================================================
yeah for shit sure... i hate posting anything connected here ..it only ends up all streched out and disconnected which only incites apathy from lazy viewers.
This works to self contain it and faving it insures that whoever investigates it as a fav...gets a more comprehensive view of the overall work.... right there ..in your face...no excuses.
it also cuts out that annoying First page, second page , third page link shit youhave to put in the descriptions in a meager attempt at cohesion... which are nothing but tedious and time consuming.

Oh ..i missed cicero ...lol...i thought it was more like Monty Python's "Novel Writing at Dorchester"...( Oops and he's signed his name again )

and "suites" works just fine
