Description
A small ref/doodle sheet showing some of the range of movement of Altamaran arms.Something that I've never really bothered to mention, but is probably sort of relevant, is that the lower pair of arms is actually situated further back on the body than the front pair... so the lower arms actually rest behind the upper pair when they're laid flat, rather than stacking on top of each other.
The upper set of arms has pretty much the same range of movement as human arms do, with a degree more flexibility.
However the lower set is restricted somewhat in it's upward movement by the upper set, and so while they can be lifted into the air quite high (aided by pulling back the upper shoulders) it's not a comfortable action. If their upper hands are full, an Altamaran might do mundane actions like reach for things or fix their hair with the lower hands, but their default reflex is to use the upper hands for anything higher than face level.
When walking bipedally the arms fall more or less next to each other on each side and move with momentum as human arms would. When climbing however they show off their full range of movement and usefulness.
Neither set of arms is specifically specialised for either climbing or manipulating, as the arboreal environment they evolved in meant that different situations could require either pair for climbing/supporting weight or (for example) tool use.
As a side note, Altamarans use their hands/arms a lot in expressing themselves. Very rarely would you see one standing/sitting with all four arms just held down... As a species they are constantly gesticulating, fidgeting, carrying things, using pockets, touching things (that they probably shouldn't), touching people (that they also probably shouldn't XD), and around one another probably linking arms or holding hands.
They also haven't kicked their climbing instincts yet, so unless there are clear etiquette rules you can expect them to get all up on tables, shelves and whatever else is off the ground and can take their weight. Also if you really startle one there's a good chance they'll leap up onto the highest thing around.

I really like the design here.
I've been wondering how something like this would work realistically, and your designs are the closest I've seen to scientifically possible so far.
Do you by chance have a muscle/skeletal layout for this? I'd love to see how you'd redistribute the structures to make it all work.

Wow great anatomy, may I reference this? I own a closed species called Batra, and they are lil critters with four arms and sometimes I forget how to draw the anatomy, but this is very similar to they're structure if the torso and would prove very useful but I feel like it would be rude to use this without your approval

sure! If you're just using it for drawing reference or linking it to show people some idea, go right ahead! c:Ā

Very, very detailed. Your anatomy is excellent! I love this concept, going to go look around at your other ref sheets.

This is good to know. Especially the details about their habits with the climbing and fidgeting. Another useful and informative sheet Jess! Nicely done. <3

Fascinating. Is John Carter in theatres where you live? I liked how they animated all the Thark's gestures.

oh john carter! I don't think it's out here yet? Then again I don't really keep up to date with things... X'D but if it is, that's definitely something I'm going to check out :3

Wow! I wish I was this good.
This, this is a fantastic piece, I'm kinda left speechless by it in how well-rendered all the poses are.

really? X3 It's just kind of a random thing I threw together, to help me with their arm movement and such... Still, I'm really glad you like it! :3

This is actually really really interesting. I love all the thought that you put into this. This is kind of random, but do they have two sets of clavicles?

... Now you've got me thinking about what possible horribly complex dnd things this could relate to X'D
Oh man, Altamaran orchards are amazing~ I don't know how much better than humans altamarans would be in regular orchards though... I'm not sure that fruit trees would take their weight! XDDD I guess they'd still be faster workers what with the extra arms X3

Well, dual wielding, ambidexterity, they'd get a reflex bonus, improved climb, use rope would go up, strength bonus, etc etc.
lol XD
Damage is distributed fairly harshly for falls and hard hits though, more limbs also means more joints and tissue to damage o.o But they'd have resilience to falling and blunt damage, being tree-borne folk. Well, historically speaking.
And being like insects, look up "Darwin's beetle", they faaaaaall for a long time and just get up and walk away. o.o
So I'm sure Altamarans have some 'bounce', but once you break that threshold... eeeesh. O_o Humans are much more fragile things XD

Jesseth In reply to VikingFox [2012-03-15 04:57:49 +0000 UTC]
XD haha yeah they've got some adaptations to reduce fall damage, like their more cartilaginous skeleton and plating will actually bend somewhat to reduce impact force... but as you say you pass that point and you're bleeding out of four snapped limbs rather than two! X'0 (well, six with legs)
Altamarans actually have something of a weak point in their shoulder blade area- they're designed to fall and hit the ground on their front, so their limbs can take the strain, but the actual shoulder blades don't take heavy impacts so well- and if you can screw those up you've more or less ko'd all four arms.
Dirgans are actually trained to go for the area between the shoulder blades if the opportunity presents itself XD

gotta watch your back... literally XD
and oh god eesh, hitting them in the nerve centres right there would hurt beyond words- along with the obvious potential for paralyzing any number of their arms. Although considering target size, you'd probably be better of trying to blunt force smash their shoulder blades if you were specifically trying to immobilize them.
