Description Edit: Thank you for the interest in my calendar! For those that were asking, cause this has come up a.... lot... There's a red link to the left of the image that says "Available in the shop" in big red letters. There's also another link below the image that says "Print available" in... big red letters. Just click those!

Okay, I swear I'm not trying to kill your guys' watch lists. x.x sorry, just a sudden bout of productivity. The stuff I'm working on now will actually take a little longer then usual so... it should slow down. Maybe. I dunno.

This year's 2008 Calendar.

I ran through a selection of images, and doubled a few of them to make the most of my long and narrow pieces. I really hope you all like it.

January: Creation [link]

February: Leapfrog [link]

March: Good [link]

and Evil [link]

April: Jade Guardian [link]

May: King [link]

June: Fly me to the moon [link]

July: Hey there Sailor [link]

August: Flying Hell yeah [link]

and Night Watch [link]

September: Death [link]

October: Natural Treasure [link]

November: Death and the maiden [link]

and Desert Rose [link]

December: Salvation [link]

In case you were interested in previous year's calendars. You CAN buy them and they will be correct for whatever year you buy them in. I've tried to leave all my calendars vague for that reason, since DA changes the calendars automatically in september for the following year :

Do you think this calendar fits for 2009 as well? It's gorgeous!

yes they redo the dates every year in september, so all the old calendars are still functional.

Yeah, I know. But if you have inserted a year anywhere it should be changed. Make a note in the description that it still works for next year.

nope, no years inserted anywhere.

Beautiful. Reminds me of the art for a game called "The Great Tree".

The great tree? Never heard of it! What's it about?

AuroraGriffin In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2008-10-21 18:06:39 +0000 UTC]

It's a PC game with art, during the cut-scenes, very similar to yours. You control a fairy, collecting special pollen from a magic tree that all the other fairies depend on to survive.

That is clever how you doubled them to make your tall narrow pieces fit the calendar format. I like the effect and have been wondering what to do when I do a calendar, other than just try to do stuff that's shaped like the calendar format. I'll have to look into the sizes and shapes to use and see what I can come up with.

JessicaMDouglas In reply to robertsloan2 [2007-09-26 18:45:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh me too. I must have spent hours squinting at the limited format going "But I mostly work vertical ; ;" And then I completely accidentally put two of the long, narrow pieces on one page (I had them all in photoshop and was shoving them around in an attempt to come up with something) and I went "oooooh" *chuckles*

I'm thinking about trying something with more then just the two long narrows, I've got several miniatures that might work kind of staggered on a page. I'm just not sure yet if it'd be overwhelming.

robertsloan2 In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2007-09-26 19:07:21 +0000 UTC]

That would be pretty cool. Maybe you could use a dark or gradient or shaded background and float them over it in an interesting pattern?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JessicaMDouglas In reply to robertsloan2 [2007-09-26 19:17:30 +0000 UTC]

*nods* usually I take the picture, enlarge it, then do a 40% transparency of that layer over a dark indigo background to do my background work. I tried gradients but I must be some kind of a gradiant usage idiot because I can't ever get it to look good *laughs*

robertsloan2 In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2007-09-26 19:22:47 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. I've done gradients in Gimp and I used to do them with the Linux software because it was one of the options you could choose for desktop, and the picker was easy -- just pick two colors and decide which one was on top and there's the gradient. Gimp isn't that hard to do it in. I think I would have to create a file with the right resolution, do the gradient in it just straight up and down, choosing colors that went well and did something cool along the way... and then paste in the art itself floating on that as a background.

I can see that for that horizontal layout doing something like a tryptich would be cool, do a middle piece and then two skinnier ones on either side and lay it out so a little of the gradient shows behind them. I'll have to fool with it when I get ready to do a calendar. I think my calla lily painting would work that way but I would have to do something like your transparency-over-indigo effect behind it, or something like blow up the radiant background as a transparency effect. Or flank it with smaller florals and just do it that way.

It's too bad they don't have a vertical calendar layout. Cafepress does.

*chuckles* okay just so you know? That entire first paragraph read like a foreign language to me *grin* I'm about as computer literate as a monkey that's gotten to poke at a keyboard for a few years. We're all exceedingly impressed that I haven't caused this computer here to blow up yet.

I *love* triptychs like that. They make me all kinds of squeely, and they are just so incredibly stylish. Once I did a simple mottled background, kind of like parchment style? Then did a small corner illustration that framed the edges of the picture rather nicely. Those usually work well to fill space.

Yeah eventually I want to find someone who charges a cheaper base price then here. I can't do much with calendars, they don't really make enough profit to be worth it, but I promised my friends I'd keep putting them out.

OOPS! Gimp is a free download computer art program that you can get at [link] -- it is very complicated, but it also has easy Help files and every time you open it, a tip will pop up telling you how to use one of its many functions. It took me a while to learn how to do gradients on it, but once I did, they were fun and became my favorite thing.

Linux is a free operating system, like Windows but not as nasty, and if you get an old computer that doesn't have Windows, you can get that -- and all its applications are usually freeware or shareware that you can use without paying, just donate later if you liked it. I have used Linux several times when I had random slow old computers instead of good ones, and then I started slobbing off. The main problem is you need to be a geek to know about it just about. Not a big deal unless you get an old computer that doesn't have Windows.

Ooooh I'm glad you like my tryptich idea. I want to do some. I've always liked them. Oooh coolness, yeah, parchment background texture would rock and little corner details, maybe in knotwork. I could draw it once, scan it and then paste in the scanned corner knotwork rotating it to fit.

Cafepress has a wide variety of products and the annual fee isn't bad for a paid account, I know a lot of people who use it. Just google Cafepress and you'll find it. That's where I was going to originally do my art as objects. Also, I think Lulu.com now has some things like mugs and mousepads and stuff, not sure what, you'd have to surf their site. I know they do music CDs as well as books and you can do all sorts of stuff there. Cafepress has blank book journals with your art on them, which is a pretty neat gift item thingy.

I think it's great you do calendars, and I hope they really get popular. I loved everything you had on this calendar and it's way cool.

ah what a lovely calendar! Man I seriously need to make 12 images of one coherent theme so I can do one too. They look like so much fun.

JessicaMDouglas In reply to AngelaSasser [2007-09-19 00:15:12 +0000 UTC]

ahah but I totally didn't have one coherant theme. It just LOOKS like I did because I stuck the creation pic in the background. I really just picked stuff that looked nice next to each other >.>

*clings to your face* you should make a calendar.

AngelaSasser In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2007-09-19 03:52:51 +0000 UTC]

There's something about all the colors and the themes that really do work together , despite being different. It's loverly.

And I astound myself....I've got *checks* 200 deviations....and not a 12 that look good together as a series for a calendar Just more encouragement for me to get off my ass and finish the archangels (and maybe even move on to fallen angels..mmm).

JessicaMDouglas In reply to AngelaSasser [2007-09-19 03:59:19 +0000 UTC]

FINISH THE ANGELS! DO MORE ANGELS!

How the hell did you end up with 200 pics and no twelve that work together? Isn't that almost statistically impossible?

eh it's kind of a variable thing. The good and evil pics in ... oh crap I can't remember which month I stuck them in. The one with the fox masks and swirlies. Those were done right on the board. Others were done on paper and transfered, etc. Just depends on what I have on hand.
