Description
Well I asked, and a couple people said they'd be interested in a an airbrushing tutorial. (This is for Photoshop CS3)Since I'm working on this picture of Daine anyway, I thought I'd go through step by step how I work on it
I'll work on Eyes, skin, and hair later. If you have any questions, or if you think I missed something feel free to ask!
I hope you like it

They are seriously the most helpful thing ever, it bums me out so much if I find an artist I love who has no tutorials, cause I wanna know how they did it! ^_^

Oh wow. I never thought of using complementary colours to shade. Does it work the other way around as well?
π: 0 β©: 1
jessijoke In reply to RoxyMcSocks [2009-07-28 01:21:52 +0000 UTC]
If you want a really shiny drawing you can highlight with complementary colors But for the most part for normal lighting I try to stick with the color of the lighting (for example, sunlight = light yellowish-white)
Or did you mean does it work the other way around if you have blue skin shade it with orange? If that's when you meant, It can work the other way around but try using a darker variation. For example, if the skin is blue, shade with brown because it is the darker version of orange

I meant the second part, but complementary colour highlighting is useful to know too.
Thanks for the tips. ^^

I forgot to ask something. The deviantion I'm working on has a stream in it but I don't know how to color water. Any tips?

Ok I swear by this for anything new that you really don't even know where to start, when drawing. Grab a couple photos off googles and practice tracing them over first. Teach yourself to see the shapes that hide in water, where it gets darker, where it gets lighter, you'll notice certain shapes are repeated, while some are odd. You'll learn how it looks when there is a small dip in the stream, and how to draw it. These are for studies only of course, not your actual art. It will teach your hand to draw the hands, and your mind to imagine them. I'll show you what I mean
Grab a photo.
[link]
Use a red paint brush in photoshop, and trace over it on a separate layer.
[link]
Than hide the layer with the photo and check out your red line
[link]
Study the shapes you made, take note of which kinds of curves show up more than once (For example I see quite a few squiggles that look like ww) do this a few times and you'll start picking up the pattern yourself making it easier to imagine your own stream
You'll have a better instinct for the lights and darks.

So I should do this anytime I want to learn to draw something? I just submitted the deviation. The water still ended up lousy though. Thanks.

I do If I am going to draw an animal, and I'm having trouble with the anatomy, I trace a couple photos, than I study how they look traced. Than I try freehanding um a few times and if I'm still having trouble I go back and try again until I feel like I can draw them without having to think about it
And Honestly, I don't think it looks bad at all

It's not really self degrading I made it when I was 12 you see. I used to read joke books constantly and I was always quoting them until it got to the point where I'd say "Mom want to hear a joke?" And she'd say "YOU'RE just a joke."
I thought it was cute back than. *grin* Most people tend to call me Jokie now

Wow, that's deep. You and your mum must be quite close, even though it was a long time ago. If you could change that Username, what would you do?
I didn't have a clue what airbrushing was until I saw your tutorial, but now I've learnt something. I've been through several tutorials and yours is really helpfull.

Heh I would probably change my name to Jokie, or Jessicajoke.
Airbrushing is like, signature for photoshop. But I didn't see many tutorials that explained it well. Honestly I had tons of help learning from DA artists, who each gave me a few small tips here and there. I also really wanted to help people get used to using more colors in their shading instead of staying on one solid coloring, knowing to put their slider nearer reds/purples for shadow and yellow/orange for highlights because it makes the colors pop more and seem more real Because so often in tutorials they are just like "Than you put down your next shadow and soften the edges"
And they use some crazy color like dark red and you are like >> I think I'll use this color cause it looks better.
But than in the end your picture looks nothing like theirs and you have NO idea why. *shakes head* Silly artists...
LOL ok sorry slight rant for those who don't give tips with color in their tutorials. Would have helped me so much when I was younger *shakes head*
<3 I'm glad you found my tutorial helpful ^_^ That makes all the time put into it totally worth it.

Worst thing in the world is a tutorial you want to use that is to confusing, so I'm glad you said it was easy to understand

Yay! More Tutorials. Yours is actually one of the most helpful ones out there. Especially when dealing with shadows. I never thought about using different colors other than black or near black. (Even though black isn't a color, but I don't know what to call it. XD )
I'll have to try it out sometime. I've been experimenting with more realistic art in paint programs and I ALWAYS mess up when it comes to the shadows. XP

jessijoke In reply to Vinstepula [2008-06-23 02:50:37 +0000 UTC]
Black is dark, or the absence of color, and thus, using it often flattens out pictures instead of giving them more depth
I hope it helps. It's what I learned in color class I found it extremely helpful

For the most part, I wouldn't recommend flat out drawing classes. Drawing 1 teaches a lot about using boxes and perspective... And drawing II Teaches a bit of color. But the real value in those classes is forcing you to draw big pictures on big pieces of paper. And finishing them.
It teaches by giving you experience.
Color is a VERY good class to take.
2D design is easy, but doesn't teach you a ton.
3D design .. at least in my school was a pointless waste of my money and life.

I'll have to see if the offer Color in my college. I heard that someone was going to take it, but I never saw it in the enrollment. I probably will take Drawing I even though it may not be the best. I have to take electives, it might as well be something that I enjoy; I have to get the credits in somehow. XD

LOL I've always thought I'd be good at philosophy since I'm so good at making nonsense sound legit.

Vinstepula In reply to jessijoke [2008-07-15 20:13:32 +0000 UTC]
I thought I would be good at it too, seeing that I think like a philosopher. I have my serious ideas, and then those nonsense ideas that I set up and make sense that completely baffles the other person.
But no, we had to read a lot on other philosophers and tell what they meant. Socrates was alright, but Aristotle was the worst ever. He may have great ideas, but he fails horribly at putting them on paper. Uhg.

I did start to make up some of it. Strangely enough, I got all A's in that course. So either what I said made sense, or what I said didn't make sense, but sounded impressive.
