Description Yami: "You have trespassed in my soul! For that, you must play with me! Play a game, that is..."

"Sitting by himself in the back of the class, 10th-grader Yugi always had his head in some game-until he solved the Millennium Puzzle, an Egyptian artifact containing the spirit of a master gambler from the age of pharaohs! Awakened after three thousand years, the King of Games possesses Yugi, recklessly challenging bullies and evildoers to the Shadow Games, where the stakes are high, and even the most ordinary bet may result in weirdness and danger beyond belief! Let the games...begin!"

This is how Yami looked when he first appeared in the manga. He's calmed down and cleaned up quite a bit, since his origins. (This iteration of him is also known as Season 0 Yami.) Quotes are from the first book. This was so much fun and challenging to draw. So many details! I made my own pose, but I referenced the heck out of my mangas! His straight jacket-like vest seems to subtly change multiple times throughout the mangas, making it very difficult to find a reference to stick too. So, it'll look a tad different from the one he wears at Duelist Kingdom. (No wonder Kazuki changed it to a plain black vest for the rest of the story after. It takes a lot of time to draw.)

Even though S0 Yami looks evil (and some of the fandom thinks he is) I do not believe he is. For one, every person he punishes did something wrong, be it threatening someone's life, or harming someone in some way. Yami never hurts innocent people. I admit, he does start out a bit "trigger happy" with his penalty games, but again, each of those people deserve it. I think he starts out that way, due to having been sealed in his Millennium Puzzle for 3,000 (5,000 in the anime) years and not having any memories upon waking up. All he seems to know is Shadow Games. It is also suggested that Yami's personality slowly takes traits from Yugi, such as kindness, loyalty, compassion towards others, While Yugi slowly takes the traits of courage, determination, confidence from Yami. Also, it seems as though he, at first, thinks he is also Yugi. This is exemplified by how he talks about Yugi's Grandpa as if he is his own grandfather, and how he responds to situations that happened to Yugi as if it happened to him as well. Yami and Yugi (after noticing each other's existence) also tend to refer to each other as "the other me." They both identify themselves as one person, but as the story progresses, they begin to realize that Yami is actually a separate spirit. However, it seems as though their spirit's are tied together in some way. It is stated in one of the manga's that; "As long as one Yugi's soul lives, the other one will live too. They both exist together, or not at all." (This quote takes place before they learn that Yami is a pharaoh, so they still think he is just Yugi's other personality, however, the statement still holds true.)

By the way! The word "Yami" just means "shadow" or "dark." In the manga and Japanese anime, his name is not "Yami." He has no name until the very end of the story. So, he is just called "Pharaoh," "Other me," and "Partner." (and a lot of the times "Yugi", by his friends.) The manga labels him as "Dark Yugi" (aka, "Yami Yugi") or "Yu-Gi-Oh" (aka, "King of Games," or "Game King"), however, neither of these titles are used to address him within the story. The English version of the anime messed up in season 2, saying his name was "Yami" and them never using the word again. So, every fan calls him Yami.

Yami and Yugi, why are you guys so much fun to draw!? I need to draw more modern versions of Yami...    I actually love all his iterations. I'm not sure if I'll color him. He'll be a nightmare to ink with all those tiny details! Oh, Yeah! I couldn't find a detailed reference for the right side of the Millennium Puzzle, so I drew the left on it instead,

That crazed look! spooky! But you portrayed him well! Good grief though, he DOES have a lot of details I commend you for surviving that XD

One of these days, I'll get the chance to just sit down and revisit the Yu-Gi-Oh! series. I have some really old Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards from a long time ago, but that's about all I have left of the series. Kinda sad for forgetting about it, haha. I found myself looking up the opening of S0 the other day

Great sketch! Good luck if you do color it x'D

Right? Yami's about to issue a Penalty Game! I'll text you the two pictures I referenced for it. Thanks. I enjoyed the entire process though. If I draw more full body Yugi/Yami sketches, I'll finally get some clothing wrinkle practice. XD

Lol! Am I bringing back interest? Don't feel too bad. I only just got into Yu-Gi-Oh! (By the way, I just finished the Capsule Monster spin off. LOVED it! It was the most physical and athletic I ever saw Yami be! Lol! XD) I'm at the final episodes of the original series. I've never seen a tv show where you don't learn the protagonist's name until episode 219. XD Did you? Isn't little Yugi cute? His voice is even cuter!

Thanks! I'm still thinking about it, he's sitting, ready, in my Procreate app.
