Description
This is a photo of everyday life in the Philippines. A commonality in almost every street in the metro and suburbs - a homeless young boy, half naked and hopeless. Nothing left to wear, nothing left to eat. No home, no family. No hope - for now. If only we could do something. Something to change this cruel yet predictable world. One step at a time, one step at a time.--
"Whenever you feel sad
Whenever you feel down and out
Lost love, falling grades, crappy friends or what
The thinking of ruining your life
Ending or asking for something new
Cursing how much you hate it
Think about this
Someone would rather live your life
Someone who needs help rather than being fed
Someone... Someone..
Try living your life through us,
Live your life through our daily eyes."

No problem. I'm pretty sure that was my first critique.

The image captured some much emotion. You feel the need to run to the child and do something. The black and white is a beautiful contrast to bring out the set of emotion. Also I feel the child is very cold being curled up like that. The environment is very sad with its cold corner and trash. The crop is nicely done.
The words are perfect. I can't point out a thing I would change.
The lighting is beautiful and captures the boy in his sad state. The brightness of the lower part of the image really lets your words pop. Lovely image!

This photo is very moving. I am guilty of noticing the sign immediately upon viewing. The sign, in it's boldness, depicts "business as usual" And next to the sign you have a small boy that makes you think about the entire photo and life itself. You get the feeling it is a warm day because he does not have his shirt on. I was also thinking how he is looking for the small comforts in life by using his shirt as a pillow. The shade also leads me to believe the temperature is not all that comfortable for him. Your mind begins to question why or how, this young boy is brought to this particular situation. It opens doors to the thought of him being vulnerable and lonely. It is a very moving piece.

This is a truely shocking photograph and the title and the quote play a very strong part in this photo.
I think that you could of edited it so that darker parts of the picture we're more dark so it contrasts well the light parts. This is a child on the street and the contrast between how dark and shocking this is and how innocent and fragile this child really is. you have to be careful with black and white photography, as it can sometimes look as if the photographer hasn't bothered to edit it and has lazily changed it to black and white.
However, the picture being deprived of colour makes it so much more shocking and cold and has a much bigger impact on the viewer.
I'd love to see some more documentary photography. Well done.

I hope that everyone takes a moment to look at this picture, not only look with your eyes but look with your heart. When I saw this it brought a tear to my eye, I wanted to just walk into the picture and bring the little boy home and give him something to eat. It really struck something in my heart, and I think it does the same for everyone who looks at this. It will hopefully bring awareness to many, especially since it is a well deserved Daily Deviation. The image is so truthful, and yet people do pretend homeless children don't exist. Well, one look at this picture and it is tattooed to your mind.
The text "If only we could do something" makes us feel cold, makes us feel the helplessness of this homeless boy, it makes us want to argue, disagree, and say we can do something. Making us all just want to bring this boy home and give him a place to eat and sleep.
This image is just that powerful. I recommend everybody look at this. Feel this. Don't let this boy disappear forever. Let's know this, and know where we stand, first world country or third world. We all can feel this. We can feel, as humans alike.

As a fellow Filipino, I can feel what *jeyminems is trying to portray in this image. I know for a fact that there are a lot of homeless people in the Philippines, sleeping their way through streets without blankets (some even clothes). This makes us wish we should do something more to them.
As for the photo itself, this is a nice capture of such a sight. We could almost only see their diligence and their struggle to survive here, even during the night they try to scour food from bins to leftovers of passersby. The colors deliver the message the best, much portraying hopelessness or homelessness (or both) even without the caption (if you see homeless people everyday).
I hope this pictured touched you in a good way, making you want to help this person.

In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay.

Wow ! At first before I read your comments I thought "this photo reminds me of the Philippines." Interestingly enough it is from the PI!
Man.. it reminded me when I was in Cebu and everywhere there are homeless people sleeping on the streets like this. The harshest one Ive encountered was when a pregnant young mother in their teens had 3 children around the ages 4-10 with an infant in her arms. All the children had their hand out begging for pesos. The young woman had her infant hold out their hand to beg as well. My thoughts were "I can see that you cant take care of any of your children and yet your having another one.. let me take that baby out of your hands." But I didn't. I was a student then. I gave them 5 pesos and they left. It is so very sad and it is a serious reality. Thank you for sharing.

It would already be a part of our country forever, I'm afraid so.
I really hope I am.
Thanks too.

This image is very powerful. The hard lines, b&w, all very dramatic. The ad next to him is almost a slap in the face, ignoring the plight of the boy. I see this almost everyday in South Africa. One person can only do so much - pity so many shake off the responsibility.
Most deserving of a DD!

The most interesting part of this photo that caught my eye, is the "Curtains & Upholstery" sign next to him, along with how you said "If only we could do something". A store with curtains has fabric, which could be offered to cover him up. It's just the irony.

Wow, and to think that I'm one of those people who hate their lives. That's crazy!
I always keep forgetting how there are children and adults out there who desperately need our help and would love to live with their own family. I don't even think about food, and those other people worry about supporting their loved ones nevertheless themselves!
How could I forget something like that?
Thanks for opening my eyes again. I really needed this.

I live in Argentina, and you can see a lot of people dying of hunger, homeless people. They don't have the support of the government and the only thing they can do is ask for money, it's very sad. Congrats for the daily deviation, you deserve it.

This is very empathic.. Although I have to agree with you. This is a very common seen in the Philippines. I'm currently a medical student in UP PGH. You should see the hardships people are experiencing there. It will knock the heart of your chest. And I know people would like to see it. Although there are a lot of suffering there, you can also see the humanity in the doctors and nurses and other medical professionals working together to help their fellowmen. I'm also a nurse and we were taught how to care for patients and it is an unbelievable experience.
If you have time, we can do a joint work. I'm not that adept at photography but I would like to do some postprocessing work on photos especially as empathic as this. Goodluck!
