Description A lot of online discourse revolves around a strange species called the Conformist. Apparently Conformists work, get married, pay off mortgages, have children and watch TV until they die. I haven't met a single member of my generation who aspires to do all these things.

Anyone who's spent much time on the net will know the top half isn't mine, but it's done the rounds so many times a rebuke was inevitable.

good artwork, and powerfull images/meaning.

as for the truth?
it might lie somewhere between the two extremes.

live life. love your life partner/wife/husband/kids. protect your family.
be an honest person.

that will be a good path for life.

as for the drawing, it was really detailed and nicely drawn.
the weaboos/non-conformists were nicely drawn, and the meaning behind their words was so, so true!
(especially the part about ''we call the figures of authority fascists, yet we're milking the system for all it's worth.''
a good image once again.

keep up the good work!

I'd still choose the second option a hundred times over the first one.

There's a very easy way to calculate the merit of each act you make. Ask yourself what the world would be like if everybody else did it. A society in which everyone lived according to the top panel would be a very boring place, but it could last indefinitely. A society in which everyone lived according to the bottom panel wouldn't last one generation. Luckily, in the real world, we don't have to follow either extreme.

Well I'd rather be some pretentious hipster in stupid clothes than a wage slave chained to a desk with a wife that hates me and a kid who wants to put me in a home when I get too old.

That's all you've got to say it would last indefinitely? A society where everyone is a living dead man, does nothing with his life and eventually spends his twilight years shitting in a diaper at the cheapest old folks home his kid could find? My old man was a corporate drone, he's a living dead man who only comes to life when it's time for fox news to tell him that it's good to hate black people.

Number two is a false dichotomy, but if I had to make the choice why the hell would I want to be nothing for my whole life on the promise that "it'll last." I'd be like a girl on prom night lying down out of pity for some asshole because I think I can get nothing better.

I've obviously hit a raw nerve, but here are a few more things to consider. "Get a job" doesn't have to mean being a wage slave chained to a desk. "Get married" doesn't have to mean having a wife who hates you. "Have children" doesn't mean having an ungrateful brat. Believe it or not, it's possible to work in a field that interests you and make a positive difference, enjoy a stable, long-term and mutually loving relationship, and raise children who aren't absolute jerks. These things might be challenging and they're certainly not for everyone - I personally think marriage is a pointless formality, and my partner and I aren't going to have children - but I'm glad some people make the effort and in some cases get them right.

I'm sorry to hear about your old man and I understand why your experiences might drive you to reject the path he chose, but there's a vast and varied landscape between the extremes presented here and I'm certainly not trying to force either onto anyone.

Well if we're going by this picture with its field full of skeletons I have a hard time believing that in this context getting a job means anything other than slugging it out at a job you hate because of inertia.

As for marriage, children and all that, the top segment sure as hell doesn't look like any kind of happy and nurturing family that I've ever seen.

Yeah I get that it's possible to work a job you love and raise a good family, but where do you see that in the top of the picture? I used to see people like that, people who pissed away their lives for the magnificent reward of being another eunuch in a cubicle. They did coke on weekends to try and feel alive and blew their money on hookers.

I also knew a lot of people like in the bottom half of their. They were selfish fuckstains, dickheads and underachievers.

Yes, there is no one path to enlightenment, but this picture brought out something in me. The top more or less represents everything I hate.

I posted my half as a direct challenge to the other. There are two extremes presented here, and as another viewer noted, there's a healthy balance in between. I'd say your attitude is a lot more responsible than that of some people who start families without much planning or thought.

Study Bioinformatics. Improve the world through genetic engineering if possible. Make a living with it as you have to buy food. Have children if necessary, genetically enhanced clones if possible. Die unless you find a better alternative.

That is my list. What does that make me?

I've been around both stereotypes, unfortunately. No one seems to understand the true definition of anarchy anymore, considering that the other anarchists I've met will call you a fascist for having different opinions than theirs.

But I'm not going to lie, I'd rather be the stereotypical anarchist than the stereotypical citizen. LOL
