Starlight is an interesting character, but her personality is leaning towards being a Twilight 3.0 rather than her own. And the writers didn't make a lot of good episodes centered in her personality. She either fell into the background of her own episode, or completely messed up. Bad example being: A Royal Problem, good example being: The Shadow Play. So the problem is not in her character, but in the writers.
Sunset, meanwhile is a very unique and well-written character. She took a different path from Twilight, but still headed in the same direction. The writer really took their time.
Both of them are super cute. Sadly, we didn't get much of their early lives or their family.

I have to admit that I've never been a huge fan of Sunset. To me, she always was some sort of the "prototype" for Starlight. But as of late, she grew on me a bit more
