Description
[ Moved to Scraps September 13, 2005 ]Drawn after finishing Dean Koontz's Watchers for the first time. For those who haven't read it, Watchers is a superb thriller - the first Koontz book I've read - and its suspense was enough to make me finish the thing in almost one sitting: Saturday evening to Sunday morning. I went to bed at 6:31 AM with bloodshot eyes.
These are a couple concepts for how I see The Outsider, a hybrid monster created from recombinant DNA research and experimentation. I don't want to give any spoilers, but... I suppose posting this is sort of like a spoiler itself, for anyone interested in reading the book. Of course, The Outsider's appearance is really subject to the reader's imagination and how he or she envisions Koontz's details. I am quite fond of the black, scribbly version at the bottom of the page; I'd like to draw it again on a larger piece of paper.
Baboons are awesome. The profile is that of a hamadryas baboon; the skull is of a male chacma baboon. Look at them TEETH!

Wow.
This is fantastic true illustration. Just a page of concepts, but I think from here you are ready to do a scene from the book. Try it. Show this creature in his context with background and dramatic lighting, in action or lurking or the moment before striking, something with a lot of motion and tension.
Because you have it, that is the creature. Fantastic. Take it that next step now, you are ready!

I printed a bunch of baboon pictures, along with more skull views, so I can really try and get that look down, and a German shepherd skull as well. I'd like to draw a meshed baboon / shepherd skull, then perhaps build around that to get a final look - though I do like the frontal view of the beastie. I just love the anatomy of the skeleton!
I'll have to draw Einstein, too, because he is the loved child of the laboratories, while The Outsider is exactly as its name implies. But I have a soft spot for monsters.
Thank you as always! Drawing a scene will be challenging, but it should be fun in the process.

Ooh yeah.
Actually that is one thing I could do with the Horse Sketch. Go over the light pencil sketch in ink, fill the rest of the page with other good drawings of animals, try for a good layout and not try doing the scene. But it would almost be cheating, since I really want mountains and sky and grass too.

That's exactly how the main [human] male character, Travis, feels about The Outsider: In its unique ugliness, it was darkly, strangely seductive. I highly recommend this book; I'm already itching to read his other works! The suspense is unbelievable....
