Description I've been working on the docking module of my space station model, and I thought I would post a picture of it and invite comments.

The full size space station renders too slowly for test purposes so I created this mini space station, consisting of just a docking module and a couple of habitation levels. The final version would be part of a much larger structure.

Thanks. I couldn't resist it, the similarity of NCP to NCC was just too tempting. I wasn't sure anyone would get it though.

Hehe! Was just about to mention it. That and the speed limit. I'm surprised there aren't 'sleeping red shirts' around it

Looks nice though.

So, is this intended to be part of your previously rendered B-22 station (which I love btw ) with extra detailing for close shots, or just a commonly constructed module meant to be part of an entirely new (or any) station? In addition to the new markings, the central hub does appear different and even a little smaller in comparison, or is that just an illusion? Either way, awesome work!

You have surmised correctly, this is a common module meant to be part of any number of stations, including the B-22 model. It has various adjustable parameters such as the radius of the central hub, so it can easily be tailored to fit stations of different sizes. The hub in this version is indeed smaller than on the B-22 model (well spotted btw ).

I started this simply as an upgrade to the B-22, but now I'm thinking I should build a new station to take fuller advantage of the extra detailing; a smaller station perhaps that is suitable for closer views. I would also like it to be more skeletal, with exposed framework reminiscent of my spacedock model. What do you think?

Neat! That's certainly an interesting approach and I'm curious to see how you handle it. Will you be sticking to the "lathe" like conformity of your current station or taking a different approach, given your desire to make it smaller and implement the "exposed framework" method? There are so many different directions you could take but the component itself and its function tends to lend itself to a very particular execution.

I personally love what I call the "lathe" and the "chandelier" style constructs over more boxy and/or haphazard constructs but it has to suit your personal goals. You seem to tend toward a more industrial approach sometimes, getting to the functional nitty-gritty of your Star Trek realm (which is an awesome perspective in my opinion ).

I too prefer the lathe/chandelier style (I think of it as 'mushroom' style). Not only is it more consistent with the original Star Trek design ethos, but rounded shapes pick up the light better and render more interestingly than boxy shapes. What I want to do is have the familiar circular sections of a typical Star Trek station, but somehow join them together with open framework structures. I haven't yet figured out how to do it though. I'm sure it will come to me.

Actually, that's not true. Either it will come to me or I'll get sidetracked by something else entirely. It took me two years to complete my Enterprise model because I got distracted by another project half way through . Hopefully that won't happen this time.

This is a super creative and well-thought of design and concept! I had a laugh too when I saw the 20kph speed limit sign. Lots of personality there alone! If possible do post up the rest of the model. It must be awesome.

Thank you very much. This started out as part of my B-22 space station model (see [link] ), but now I'm thinking of building a new smaller station. See my response to BasillArt's comment [link] for more detail.

Looks great.

Just add an areal/antennae and extend the bottom to house the reactor and quarters.

Thanks. All of the features you suggest will be present in the final model, although the quarters will probably be above the docking module. At this stage I have only a rough idea of what I want the finished station to look like though.

Here is a suggestion for another project for this.

You could just add a power core and docking control center and just have this as a communal port between ships.

It could be open floor from all three dock-ports.

The other could be a much larger station.

I really like your communal port idea . I may well give it a go as a side project. Thanks very much for the suggestion.

Looks good, i had to giggle at the 20kph speed limit. Can just imagine Kirk's face as he comes screaming in at full impulse ;-p

That's good, I was afraid people wouldn't get the joke. Once the idea of a speed warning sign occurred to me it was simply irresistible.
