I personally choose Torchic every time. Treecko's more awesome, and his shiny form is PWNAGE, but torchic, once you evolve it, it's easy to beat up almost all of the early gyms!

Well, depending on the map and where he's deployed, yes. He might just rush to a wall and stay there which, even if you're caught in it, won't really kill you.
