Description One of the many alien species of my sci-fi webcomic Thugs and Scoundrels ---> [link] <---

The Yaaska are a rapid moving terrestrial species that have evolved as savannah ambush predators. Their primary senses are scent and a powerful sense of electroreception that has been able to evolve due to the dense atmosphere of their home planet. The feather-like filaments are able to detect the subtle bio-electromagnetic fields generated by their prey and each other. While they are blind to the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum available to humans, they will still adorn themselves with clothes to provide pouches and pockets and also as a place to pin objects that distort, disrupt or enhance electromagnetic fields. A Yaaska’s collection of such objects serves as a status symbol.

Until their first contact with extra terrestrial life the Yaaska lived in less than a dozen pre-industrial nation states, ruled primarily by an oligarchy of allied warlords. Outside the walled cities, the majority of the Yaaska were organised into large tribal bands based on maternal kinship. The female of the species is larger and more agressive and are the only ones to grow the dagger-like spurs on the inner knees, used for grasping large prey items and fighting with other females for dominance.

After contact with the technologically superior societies that inhabit the galaxy, the Yaaska were quick to adopt the use of the firearms that found their way to their planet. Life in post-contact Yaaska society is not very different to pre-contact. Due to the violent and tumultuous political nature of Yaaska society, there have been no major financial investors from off-world. However, due to their hardy physiology, savagery and culture of tribal violence, the Yaaska are in high demand as mercenaries, bodyguards and frontline soldiers. They are primarily used as a light shock force because of their speed and fearlessness, and the tales of Yaaska soldiers torturing and eating their opponents has caused them to be feared across the galaxy.

Very interesting alien concept! Like the idea of using electromagnetic fields to find their prey. Very cool indeed!
