Description Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps)
This common but reclusive marsupial makes its home in a wide range of vegetation types, from wet and dry sclerophyll to temperate woodland to tropical rainforest. It can be found all along the north and east coast hinterland as well as most areas of Tasmania, where it was introduced.
Sugar gliders make nests in tree hollows and usually live in groups of around 10-15. They feed on arthropods, fruit and flowers. The membrane of skin that runs between their fore and hind feet allows them to glide up to 90m.
They are frequently kept as pets in the United States while in Australia it is illegal to catch, breed or own Sugar gliders (along with most native mammals).
