Description
the big polyphemus planet was a real challenge, even though it just looks like a blue jupiter it is not like it , james cameron wanted some particular detail and patterns on the planet, that later starting from textures provided by WETA ,I had to paint tons of details on this planet, pandora in this shot was totally done from scratch in photoshop and then projected in 3D geometrypolyphemus painting for this shot is 10K wide and 16 bit file, it was a huge photoshop file
this image is featured in the pandora's documentary and in the CINEFEX magazine

I love how the moon/satellite of the planet makes a shadow on the gas planet! I also love the colors and detail put into this!

Hello Jjasso!! I LOVE this art and am interested if you made a total Pandora 2d map? Did you make it in Photoshop or did you paint directly onto a 3D model? What program do you use? I not only am a big fan of Avatar but also ofspace and planets in general! I think anyone who knows what Jupiter really looks like in detail can tell it is not at all the same. This is truly an amazing, perfect work of art!

Β Can you imagine waking up on Pandora every morning, and seeing that hanging in the sky? The color blue is like one of my favorite overall colors.
Too bad the humans there messed it up with the natives, and were thus banished. No human will be able to see that sight again for generations, if at all.

A satellite, so close to a gas giant planet, with a monstrous gravity impossible to have serious clouds or oceans. Great painting, but very far from reality.

I think Ima try something like this. never thought of painting a gas giant from scratch with a photo-real style. I will have to try it

I saw this amazing thing so many times before but this is the first time I realize...aboutΒ the dark side of Pandora, shouldn't be glowing?
π: 0 β©: 1
JJasso In reply to Lyriato [2013-11-13 18:36:21 +0000 UTC]
totally agree with you, is just that Mr. Cameron didn't want to spoil his own movie, and present the glowing night forest after and when the story needed it, but of course it would be a glowing dark sideΒ

Fascinating. It almost looks like an eye or something. Like something organic, something alive.
I'm curious: Pandora isn't the only moon of Polyphemus, theres even another one in this picture. Were there also plans for the other moons designs and environments, their habitability and so on or were they simply designed like dots in the sky, deserts like our moon only in a different color?

"...even though it just looks like a blue jupiter it is not like it , james cameron wanted some particular detail and patterns on the planet..."
Now see, that's really interesting to me.
I'm curious, what did he want specifically?
Your average movie-goer wouldn't have noticed if you had just used Jupiter and tinted it blue. Makes me wonder what details he wanted to set it apart from Jupiter. And why. Very cool.
Oh, and of course, awesome work!

Huh... gorgeous image, as usual. However, the shadows don't match up: that little moon seems to throw a shadow at a wrong angle, considering the angle of light on the planets. But I'm nit-picking. I think the best thing here is the sense of immensity of the gorgeous blue giant as compared to Pandora: I think that this is your best accomplishment in this image.

so did you produce the still for documentaries/posters etc... or did you also do some of the in-movie CGI?
π: 0 β©: 1
JJasso In reply to MatthewPaver [2011-01-20 16:10:43 +0000 UTC]
it's not a still, it's a frame from the sequence I worked for, I worked for a total of 4 shots in this movie, look up for my credit at the end

This is awesome. My wallpaper for a month after the movie release
Though this is one of the most strange (to my mind) shots in Avatar. The big planet (Pandora is its satellite) is pretty much a recoloured Jupiter? lol maybe it's just me
And the ship seems pretty big to me Though this is OK (to my mind, again ^^), since this way the scene transmits the feeling it otherwise wouldn't.
Thank you and all the Avatar team for the fantastic work, and James especially. Thanks.

I hope you realize that, with you revealing the pivotal work on Avatar you did, you're going to become an artistic demigod if not a full blown one. XD
In all honesty thank you so much. You did an amazing job and the movie was an absolute masterpiece.

Aww damn, now I feel bad for assuming the artist (which I didn't know was you at the time I saw it) really did just recolour Jupiter in blue...I was disappointe din that until reading your comment now I only just now am noticing the moon's shadow on...whatever the gas giant's name is and the space station too now that I can spend more time looking at it
I never thought I'd be faving this scene when I saw it in the cinemas
