Description
Player race artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for. These are the so-called advanced races, which are subspecies of the core 9 races to be released in their own separate advanced races books. The art director wanted another Dengu subrace, but was having difficulties coming up with concepts. I figured, if Dengu love treasure - particularly crystals - so much, what if a subrace evolved from otherwise spending too much time around magical crystals? Perhaps they began as a cult that not only worship crystals (as many Dengu do), but took to consuming or embedding them into themselves, and have actually become more like them after so many generations, changed forever by their power: they've lost their normal corporeal senses, but gained some unique way of perceiving the world in turn. While the Dengu are normally robust and hearty, I imagined these crystal-touched Dengu are much more delicate, but able to store magical energy in the crystals they've cultivated within themselves, making them excellent mages.
Anyway, the art director liked the idea, so here we have it!

I would just like to say this: THEY ARE ADORABLE. Nothing can stress my love for subspecies of a known fictional animal. I always would find a way to search for some method to produce a different species related to the 'main' species. Doubly so if the subspecies is troglobytic, or lives a subterranean life, removing the need for eyes as eyes are soft bits of flesh and gel that can get damaged. The design reminds me of moles, and moles are indeed balls of fluff with legs. Perhaps it is mindful for a trait the subterranean or troglobytic Dengu be frightened or distrustful of bright light because they live deep under the earth where they mine their crystals. Troglobytic animals tend to rely on tactile sensations, perhaps loud noises may make them jump. Perhaps due to the accumulation of the crystals in their systems they may believe the crystals of the world belong to them and they belong to the crystals ('you are what you eat' or in this case 'you are what you hoard'). Animals other than Homo sapiens also have religious worship, albeit far less sophisticated in their organization and apparatuses, so the 'Cult of the Crystal-Touched' or 'Crystal Cult' may not be as far-fetched fantasy as it may seem in reality (chimpanzees hold meetings by hollow trees which they strike with stones, for example).

I can just see one of these raising his hand as a group of terrible beasts attack and then wiping them out in the span of a few moments.

*chuckles* Yeah, sorta like the little old wizard-monk that everyone underestimates until it's TOO LATE :V

I thought more of he was just looking for cool rocks, a monster tried to eat him, he took care of it and then went back collecting rocks.

That is quite an interesting idea. I guess, they do have to eat magic or crystals as well to survive and talk via telepathy, since i don't see much of a mouth. They might look intimidating to others, i guess. Never the less really nice done!

Yeah, I'm not sure quite what all their features exactly will be, but I think it gives a good gist, and is a bit different from usual. And yes, I imagine a lot of other races might find them a bit creepy or off-putting, but I'm betting they think their race is the most beautiful since their bodies most resemble the things they love and admire most Thanks a lot!

They are quite different, yes! I once played Shard RPG, which is in a world full of crystals, so there have been some creatures, that might be in that direction, but beside of that, i haven't seen it yet.
In any case: Awesome work!

That's so cool!
I wonder if they'd have different strengths/weaknesses/abilities depending on the kind of crystal they'd internalized... diamonds would be strong but rigid, opals soft, but flexible. Maybe have magic abilities to go with; hematite for example, might not be able to cast magic, but would be nearly impervious to it, able to ground out any magic directed at it.
Just a thought...

*chuckles* I like the idea, fits in with the gemstone dragons, but maybe a bit too complicated for what the team has in mind, perhaps? If it weren't too OP, I'd totally homerule something like that, though!
