Description
Here you guys go! Lemme know if you have any questions- I use Adobe Photoshop, but you should be able to apply this technique to other programs.
- I use a tablet, but with effort and patience, the same result can be approximated with a mouse.
- Can be done on a single layer, or many.
- Can be done using only three colours.
- Does not require special brushes.

This is the best tutorial I've ever seen. I tried this myself, it's simply explained and easy, but gives a very realistic outcome. Great job! <3

whats a tablet? (i always had that question)

A tablet is sort of a special pad that you draw on with a special pen. [link] So instead of using a mouse, you use a pen, and you can simulate things like pen pressure and thickness that you can't with a mouse. Some tablets have special screens, so it's like drawing right on the screen, but those are mostly expensive ones.

I cannot wait to try this! Thanks for sharing your technique. I've always painted my fire differently and it ended up looking flat or motionless. This looks amazing!!

jocarra In reply to Lyrak [2010-09-23 04:44:53 +0000 UTC]
XD You can use mostly the same technique for traditional painting, just can't colour dodge - hafta do it manually :b

It's a very different animal though, because unless you use airbrushes, it will not behave like most standard digital brushes as you can't control flow and opacity inquite the same ways. There's a lot more fussing and toying. Plus, you don't usually start with a dark paper, especially in watercolor.

Yup, definitely agree. You can layer to a degree using acrylics, which often can be used in a semiopaque way to build up layers of colour, similar to watercolour, but dries a ton faster so you can keep working instead of having to wait an hour or having to blowdry your paper :b
But yeah, definitely more difficult traditionally, I think.

I think probably the easiest would be oils but I don't know for sure... never got my grubby nubbies on oils yet to play with 'em. lol

jocarra In reply to Lyrak [2010-09-25 05:39:00 +0000 UTC]
Oils are sorta different - they're great if you like to mess around with the colours a lot and don't want to worry about them drying out on you (which is what frustrated me about acrylic), and there'd be a lot more active painterly mixing going on, rather than translucent layering of colour like in acrylics, unless you actually want to wait a day or two (or more :S) for the oils to dry. Oil is fun, but messy and expensive.

Lyrak In reply to jocarra [2010-09-25 11:33:08 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the messy and expensive part is what bugs me. lol I have no space where I can make a nice big mess, and no money to play with oils.
I HATE how fast acrylics dry. lol You wouldn't guess by my gallery, but my two favorite media to use that I have gotten my hands on are oil pastels and chalk pastels. But I use them up like crazy because I'm heavy-handed with them, I like to smuch and blend and use a TON on the paper (especially the chalks, since I like to work LARGE in those - and then they don't fit in the scanner LOL). So those are an expense thing for me. Plus with the chalks I need either a large table or a big hard floor to work on. XD That and I really need a better fixative besides cheap hairspray - my one really big piece has to be folded (it's done in sections) for transport, and even taking precautions and putting a bit of paper between the layers it still manages to smudge a bit - and I hairsprayed the crap out of that thing.
My ability to play and shade improves greatly when I'm workign with something I can smush around and mix more actively.

I like chalk/oil pastels quite a bit, too, although it's easy to really go through them quickly, especially if you're doing a medium to large piece that features a lot of one colour... x_x
Oddly enough, while I enjoy chalk pastel, I can't stand charcoal x_x which is basically like the chalk pastel version of graphite. Dunno why.

Lyrak In reply to jocarra [2010-09-27 01:07:41 +0000 UTC]
It's grainier. I can tell you that right now. I like charcoal a lot less too. Chalk pastels have stuff added that makes them roll off nice and smooth. Charcoal is "drier" and doesn't blend as well, really. Now, I like playing with charcoal if it's actual "I just dug it out of the fire" type stuff, because it amuses me. lol But that's different. I draw on rocks with that. XD
But yeah, the going through them like mad is the other reason I haven't been using them lately. :\

jocarra In reply to Lyrak [2010-09-27 05:12:35 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's it. Sometimes charcoal will blend nice and smooth, until you come across a random hard chunk that leaves horrible scrapes across the bit you were just trying to blend smoothly x_x
