A little swordplay animation... Rotoscoping is fun... Yep.

Right now, it's only in its most crude form - I was going to make it longer, but I thought this was an appropriate place to end it. I hope to make this into a proper animation of Jayli some day. Y'know, properly drawn with colour and a background... *sighs wistfully* Oh well...

~6 hours. 65 frames rotoscoped. Drawn in Adobe PhotoShop 7.0, tested in Microsoft GIF Animator, presented in Flash. 20.

Whoa!! You've gotten good! How did you do this? I see the list of programs you used, but are there tutorials on it? It's freakin AMAZING!

jocarra In reply to Advent-Kadaj [2007-12-22 22:40:06 +0000 UTC]

There are probably tutorials on it, yes. The key, though, is that it's ROTOSCOPING, and rotoscoping = copying/tracing. It's not hard to do, but instead of just copying/tracing one picture, you copy/trace many many many pictures, and then put the pictures together into an animation. That's how complex and realistic motions were traditionally done before they could do digital motion capture.

*chuckles* Not really. I -make- spare time when I can, otherwise I'd go insane. This only took about four hours...

woah!Im pretty sure this was asked be4 but u have to many comments to read so... What program did U use for the Rotoscoping?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to superjohan [2007-11-17 20:39:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I didn't use any particular program for rotoscoping. I just paused the animation every frame or so (which was hard, because it didn't have a pause frame-by-frame feature), and then did a screenshot, and then imported all the screenshots into PS, each frame on a different layer. It took a few hours just to do all the screen captures X3 Then I redrew each frame.

Heh, actually, that's precisely what it was rotoscoped from. :3

Love your avatar, by the way X3 That was a good Flash cartoon...

jocarra In reply to atyunnangayun [2007-11-14 18:40:00 +0000 UTC]

Heh, no. Supposed to be a sword, but with a trail showing the tip. I rotoscoped it from a Discovery Channel type documentary thing, hoping to turn it into Jayli using her sword and magic.

It moves all waah and its like its a person actually moving instead of just a cheap animation that just moves like 2 times in 60 seconds but no yours actually moves

I'm a medieval fighter, and I was looking at the movement of the wrist and pivet points a lot. When it came to the final frames it looked like the wrist twisted more than a normal human wrist can, but that's just my opinion. That was really good though. I could neve have done that

Ah...this is the coolest thing I've seen! I love the way you have the white trail off the tip of the sword, it makes it so much more intricate with the loops and stuff showing you where it's been. The way the body moves makes me imagine the weight of that thing it's flinging around and that one false move and -swoosh!- there goes a foot. Or a buttock. It got preeetty close at one point! Lol. Supurb job, my friend!

Help!! I wanna draw the animation in photoshop and then import it in flash. I tried, but the parts where itΒ΄s supposed to be transparent, thereΒ΄s this annoying white square all around the imported drawing that gets in front of all the background and other objects. You got any idea how to do it right?

By the way, woooooooooo that sword thingieΒ΄s beauuuutiful!!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to suthnmeh [2007-09-17 17:13:51 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, you're asking the wrong person X3 There are annoying compatibility issues between PS images and Flash images (at least, between Macromedia Flash and Adobe PS - I don't know about Adobe Flash CS) in which transparencies don't work. The only thing that I know how to do is JUST use PS, and animate using Adobe Image Ready or Adobe Premiere, OR just use Flash.

suthnmeh In reply to jocarra [2007-09-17 17:58:57 +0000 UTC]

myeeeah.... Well, thx! ^^ but see, thatΒ΄s the problem. I wanna do things with the background and the camera and the characters that canΒ΄t be done in imageready. And in flash, all my drawings look poopie, sketchy, messy, wrinkly... But yeah, thank you so much anyways *huggel* and congrats on the yeepee sword dancing!
