To be honest i don't normally add tutorials unless they are suggested because i don't often use them, but this one did stand out to me. And this is one i may use in the future

Neato! I've never used Photoshop but I have artistic ability. Do you think I could still follow this and get a decent result?

jocarra In reply to OctopusGames [2012-03-05 23:59:19 +0000 UTC]
I definitely think you could Unfortunately, I didn't go into too much detail on Photoshop, in that I sort of assumed the person following it had basic working knowledge, but if you want to give it a go, I can definitely try to help if you'd like
It's really a matter of patience and fiddling with settings - it doesn't require tons of artistic ability or tons of graphic designer/Photoshop wizardry, although those can definitely help!

Cool! I'll mess around with it and go through the motions, see what I come up with first. Then we can go for round two after I have something to ask about. Sound good?

Certainly Mostly, the things that aren't explained in detail in the tutorial are when I refer to brush or layer settings. Brush settings should be up at the top where it shows what brush you have selected (if it's not there, it might have it's own tab along the side, depending on your default PS workstation setup) - the two I'm most concerned with are opacity (how transparent your colour is) and flow (how fast it comes out, makes it work like an airbrush).
As for layers, if the layer tab isn't already open, you can go to Window > Layers to show it. It'll have a little drop-down menu that's defaulted to Normal for each layer - that's the blending mode for the layer, which affects the appearance of layers it's on top of. Pretty much everything for my map is on its own little layer, meaning you can mess with it by itself without messing anything else up.

Oh, excellent! I'm always afraid I'll either be too vague, or go into unnecessary detail (or both XD). Thanks a lot, and best of luck to you! I'd love to see how it turns out

jocarra In reply to CyropsArt [2012-03-06 00:03:29 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! All things considered, they're still on the "smallish" end. The World of Oakvale map was 4000x2666, and the Turzel and Paruda map were 3000x2000, I believe. I don't think you'll want to go too much smaller than that, unless you don't intend to have a lot of detail

For next time, maybe work on making the land shapes a little more organic/natural looking? Or rather, the central body of water seems to make a rather notable star shape into the landmasses around it, plus the star-shaped continent in the middle - maybe this is intentional, but it makes the design look more contrived than natural.
Again, if it was intentional, that's fine, but that's the main thing that jumps to mind.
