Description WARNING: Lots of spoilers both in the meme and in the comments below. If you haven’t seen this whole series but there’s a chance that you might watch it, I recommend doing that instead. Look, I‘ll even link to the beginning for you . Note that even aficionados of other Spider-Man continuities are vulnerable to spoilers.

On the other hand, I knew huge spoilers for this show before I even decided to watch it, so…

1.) The Spectacular Spider-Man, adapted for television by Greg Weisman (the guy who made Gargoyles and Young Justice) and Victor Cook (I think he works on Ben 10 now). My first real foray into Spider-Man and it turns out I love it.

2.) Harry Osborn, definitely. He probably has more character development and complexity than anybody—he’s a good person, but he puts up with so much crud from everyone (including his friends and family) that he winds up making things worse with short-sighted decisions. Things only ever go well for him so that they can go badly later, and the whole time he’s bouncing from friendly to selfish and good to borderline evil.

3.) Well, there’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the middle, because it is his show, after all. We also have Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, who’s probably my favorite villain; I didn’t realize he was originally supposed to be a chubby, nebbish nerd, so that was interesting to watch. And we also have Gwen Stacy and Liz Allan, the former for trying to keep her friends’ lives stable amidst all the chaos and the latter for trying to keep her own life stable, neither of them succeeding very well.

Really, most of the cast should be in this slot. But I managed to limit it to these four.

4.) I can’t say I hate her, but if I have to pick a character who “sucks”…Sally Avril. What good things can you say about her?

5.) Does that mug say “Evil Genius” on it? Really, Greg Weisman, you’re usually more subtle than that!

…Then again, Xanatos was pretty open about considering himself an evil mastermind. And heck, I would totally buy a cup like that myself.

6.) The Green Goblin in general, though this particular scene comes from “The Uncertainty Principle”:

“Is anyone else getting déjà vu? Oh well, I’ll just run with it.”

That’s probably only funny in context.

7.) On the one hand, awesome characters with complex interactions and plotlines. On the other, fight scenes that actually manage to go on for a long time without getting boring. Symbolized together here as Spider-Man ties up a pair a rival, USTing criminals together for kicks.

8.) “Harry, what are you doing?!
“Cowboying up.”

And then he flies a freakin’ helicopter in a half-dozen freakin’ windows, saving Spider-Man’s life. Seriously, why’d we have to wait so long to see him do something this awesome?

9.) Sally…doing pretty much what she always does. Except this was the first time, so those of us who didn’t know better still thought she was a legitimate love interest. Crafty.

10.) Yeah, this is the moment when Harry established himself as the Woobie , which is what first really caught my attention about him. (I already knew he had a lot more crud to go through thanks to TVTropes-acquired spoilers.) Also, Liz after Peter broke up with her, and still only two episodes after Mark was sent to jail. Poor girl.

These two should go off and console each other. Seriously, they were married in the comics so I can totally see it happening.

11.) My brother: “I don’t know…Harry doesn’t seem like the Green Goblin. He’s not crazy enough.”

Harry, on the show, with a slurred, half-drunk insanity: “Maybe I have some anger issues!” *makes weird gasping sound halfway between a laugh and a sob*

Well played, scriptwriter Dave Bullock. And excellent voice work, James Arnold Taylor.

12.) Oh sweet dah, what is Norman doing? Is he framing his own son for his crimes? And is he giving Harry a twisted ankle to make it seem more likely?! And letting Harry believe that he really is the Goblin, ruthlessly taking advantage of the fact that he’s too drugged up to realize whether it was true or not?!

…So yeah. I’m pretty sure we’re supposed to hate Norman at the moment.

13.) Okay, I know the point was to make her look like she does in the comics, but…I just think Gwen looked more interesting and unique geeky. Plus, she already has two guys interested in her—did she really need to go through the whole “change your whole appearance for a love interest” schtick when she was caught in a love triangle (or square?) as it is?

14.) Okay, wait…picture on the left, Pete has no mask on, and his shoulders look bare, which sort of makes sense because I think the shirt he was wearing earlier might have just been the Symbiote anyway. Then it consumes him and he breaks free, and he’s…wearing his normal Spidey-Suit? What, under the black one? Did the Power of Love and Friendship manage to sew that up for him while he was having his weird mental battle or whatever?

15.) Felicia Hardy/Black Cat is just fun, and Walter Hardy/Cat Burglar wound up being interesting with his whole “Atoner ” thing; wish we could have seen that resolved. Hammerhead’s unnamed(?) chauffeur comes off as pretty badass, and I like the Osborns’ butler, Bernard Houseman, based on his two appearances.

16.) Awesome Goblin backflip in “Catalysts.” “Wow. Just…wow.”

17.) The fact that it got canceled after only two seasons due to copyright issues, meaning that we never get any resolution to all its hanging plotlines. GAH!

(Also, the CGI is kind of conspicuous sometimes . But whatever.)

18.) Harry/Gwen would probably be my favorite pairing, assuming that she actually reciprocated his feelings. This screenshot of Flash/Sha Shan during the school play is just so amusing that I had to include it. The picture on the right are two unnamed extras from “Reaction” and “Gangland,” whom Spider-Man arranged to have “hang out” together. They also amuse me.

19.) Well, we never really see anyone die but Uncle Ben. Anyway, I just don’t seem to like Eddie Brock/Venom as much as everybody else, so I guess he fits.

20.) Harry, finally teetering on the edge of evil? Peter, standing above the city with no companion but his own pain and guilt? Norman, blond with a mustache?! Also, not actually dead. The shocks! The twists! I can’t wait for the third season to see when this is resolved—

…except it’s never going to be. Dang it.

This new Ultimate Spider-Man show better be awesome…

Images aren't mine, I just took an insanely long time collecting and cropping them. As for this meme, its creator seems to have deactivated his/her account, making the blank version impossible to find.

Actually, the symbiote thing is explained by the fact that it bonded to Peter's suit, so when he removed it, the suit that it originally bonded to was left in tact underneath.

But awesome meme, for an awesome show. (I so wish there was more fanfics for this show, especially with Harry being IC)

Yeah, some people have suggested that. I guess it makes sense, to the extent that this ever could.

Oh, yes, how I would like more (good) fanfic of this. What I've found is...subpar.

Thanks!

Ugh yes. The only good, long multichapter fic I found... had Harry in it for five minutes at the end (although thankfully IC). AO3 has a couple of good ones, though. (But too many people like to make Harry abusive and really evil... even though the radio play shows how he would be after the s2 finale)

I rather liked how the radio play portrayed him. He's still trying to manipulate people for his own motives, but, you know...in a nice way.

With the way he was trying to set up Peter with MJ and Liz? That was the best XD Although now I'm really concerned about what was on Norman Osborn's recording.

Wow! Spec Spidey was my favorite show too. I have to AGREE THEY SHOULD HAVE NEVER MADE GWEN LOSE THE GLASSES. I like Harry too actually-he's one of my favs...I'm all for Pete x Gwen, but I do like Gwen x Harry as well...The part about how Peter dumped Liz made me sad too-along with various moments when Harry was ignored by his father Norman. Nice meme

O.k., it took forever to read your text. But it's good I'm not the only one who is upset that the show was bought by Disney. I love your meme, but i think you put a lot of the green goblin in.
If you forget about that, it's awesome!
I wish the show had kept going . . .

Thanks!

ya i like it to. the glider crashes through the building, he jumps, flips in midair, and lands on the other side of the building with the glider still intact.

4. A positive quality of Sally Avril. She may have disagreed with Liz's choice to date Peter, and was even vocal about it. But she didn't shun her, and stayed a supportive friend.

JoeMerl In reply to GregXB [2012-01-17 20:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, she seems to care about Liz, at least. (Incidentally, as happy as she was in the last episode, I think she'd get really pissed if she found out that Peter broke up with her...)

Of course she would. Pete is the geek, he's not allowed to do that.

Mostly the whole Goblin arc and what's supposed to happen with that.

I would have liked to have seen more villains (like the Jackal), Black Cat in her civilians, and Green Goblins return.

To be fair, Sony was making the show, so I'm honestly not sure if they could have continued it...all sorts of complicated legal issues there, I'm sure. Still sucks either way, though.

PeanutButterDimond [2011-06-01 01:23:27 +0000 UTC]

I knew it was Norman. Than again, I am a comic geek so, I could kind of see that using Harry's drug plotline from the comics could go well with the goblin.

I love this show. It combined all the best things from Sam Rami's films, the original comics, and Ultimate Spiderman. Kind of sad how things are going for the franchise. TSSM was canceled and Sony tried to Limit Sam's control on Spiderman 4 which led it to being scrapped for a reboot.

Hopefully the new Ultimate Spiderman series will be good. I still would have liked to see more TSSM.
