Is that even possible? I think that's just basically a star, no?

well hmm. I imagine it several different ways.
1. Since it's a ball of gas, if it was ignited by something, then perhaps the whole giant becomes engulfed in flames. Kinda like a shockwave of extreme heat that engulfs the whole planet until all the gas is used. Although idk how true to physics this might be.
2. Instant catastrophic explosion. The way I see it is similar to a bomb since a bomb is filled with explosive gases. If a giant was hit by something so powerful that it ignited its gaseous compounds then I guess it would explode, perhaps not instantly like the Death Star 2(which exploded really fast imo) but I believe larger objects take longer to explode. If it was a star perhaps the explosion might be more instantaneous since the magnitude of power is much much stronger.
3. If the giant collides with an equal, hmmm that's difficult to imagine...perhaps they would merge since they are gaseous. But giants should have some sort of solid core due to pressure. So perhaps there could be an internal collision occurring inside the giants that are visible through their gaseous layers.
4. Another way I imagine the death of a giant is if it's gases are stripped away to reveal a dead core, but if the core a giant is highly compressed gas, then as the pressure lessens the solidity would probably turn gaseous. Unless it happened fast, for example, a giant floating above the surface of a star with its gas being stripped away violently, revealing a heated core.

Well, from what I know - brown gas giants are also called brown dwarf, since they are basically a stars that never reached enough mass to start the reaction. Anyway - about that collision - they can't collide theyr mass and gravity will cause them to start rotating around each other. Any other sort of ignition would cause a reaction that wouldn't be strong enough to possibly breach the giant's gravity well - thus, creating a small sun. But that's just a thought, I'm not an astronomer.

Perhaps a rogue gas giant drifts to close to a star and as they rotate the star strips the gas giant of its...gases, would be interesting just a thought though

true though about the rotating. But scifi can eliminate that
