Description
Been wanting to do a few dark works in the manner of Redon and Goya, just little monochromatic noirs. Also fascinated by the vast archive of symbolist, surrealist & horror in frankzumbach.wordpress.com/ [please note this site has images that may be seen as disturbing, but if you're interested in new, old, obscure and surprising Symbolist artists, it's superb] This was inspired by his site, but even more so by radical changes in my own lifeTextures by sampsonx www.deviantart.com/art/Old-Pap…

Huh! I'll have to get that book, the wiki looks very interesting . . . 'chess, vodka and obnoxious sarcasm'? SOLD.
I didn't really reference any author or book . . . the cat represents fear and anxiety, both real and imagined. The imaginary fears make the cat immense and oppressive, since the imagination . . . can lie like that, and exaggerate :/

Behemoth is a very funny cat, he really loves sarcasm and black humor In fact this cat is very popular here, because this novel is a cult for some people. Breath of the time, mysticism and romance but in reality it is a parable about good and evil.
Thanks for the explanation of this work.

Thanks! I hesitated to stick with "Recluse" but, in the end, it does fit. Glad you liked the symbolism as well

I see a beautiful threat looming over a careful, yet reluctant, potential victim. she looks only half-aware, though, so I feel like she is torn between two choices, drawn to the more dangerous one (since she's not facing away from the cat) Maybe she would like to not see the possible danger, however she's ducking slightly, she also can't stop looking. the cat might not even as dangerous to the (I'll just call her) mice-woman as nature suggests. As the cat seems to be interested in something beyond...
but. no, I changed my mind,
she is secluded from the outside world, seemingly safe surrounded by her protectors, herself. Maybe she needs to protect herself !from! herself. the cat and mice being traits of her. the mice seem restless, joyful, but also reckless, while the cat is calm, yet focused. ...now I feel more like she can't help it, is impulsive (the mice) even though she knows bad will likely come from it and feels the urge to take silly risks, but wishes for the rational side (the cat) of herself to intervene. she's scared of the possible outcome, of having the mice run wild, wants the cat to keep them in charge, but also wants to protect the impulsive little things from being removed completely.
...you know, actually this is how I feel about myself quite often. Was that too diffuse? Anyway, imo, good art forces people to look at it, really great art forces people to look inside themselves.
I'm deeply in love your work!

Wow, girl Thank you. It's all of that, really. It's awful events forcing one out of one's comfort zone and all the real and imagined fears that go with change. The Recluse can no longer control her own little world and fears losing what is most precious to her, yet what was most precious may need to fall away, anyway. In the meantime as artists, why not take difficult times and make a picture out of it? May as well use them, as they don't tend to go away just because we wish them gone
Thank you Ella - your comment was awesome and made me think

I swear I thought this was traditional- Like watercolors and acrylics or something. The fact that it isn't really amazes me. You've used textures very effectively to make this look like traditional piece. Aside from that technical aspect, I love the style. Some things in art that I can always appreciate are creative stylization, animals, and women that are not overly sexualized (that's a biggy, as it bothers me personally and is a seriously dull cliche of our time.)
It's also nice to see someone base the style of one of their pieces off of famous, less recent artists instead of copying ways everyone else is currently drawing digitally. That's to say that this is a nice deviation(no pun intended) from other contemporary digital art, but not to say that the typical ways of creating it are necessarily bad.
I just wish that I remembered more from that recent AP Art History course I took so I can recall things that characterize Symbolism(as well as other categories of fine art), but I can at least use common sense to infer that it includes imagery intended to be symbolic and go beyond its pure aesthetic.
Either way, I can still appreciate this for what I see in it as well as it's beauty, and that's all that matters, I suppose.

Thanks very much, I really appreciate your comments about Symbolism and digital painting especially. I love Symbolist art, and mostly am aware of the nineteenth century artists like Redon and Moreau; even Picasso was considered a 'Symbolist' for a short time That's why the link to Mr. Zumbach's site - if you stick with it there are some fantastic modern - day Symbolist artists included there. I appreciate what you said about the traditional look as well; digital artists here have some absolutely shatteringly beautiful works, very inspiring, but I want to keep the traditional roots in my digital work. That sounds like a paradox, but it's what keeps me interested in painting digitally . . . using the mediums advantages to create something that would have taken me months to complete traditionally. I don't consider it a cheat, personally, I like echoes of traditional feeling in my digital work :/

I can understand what you mean about using the digital medium to further the same work you make traditionally. There should be no shame in it, and perhaps it's even more respectable that you go the extra mile to ensure it's authentic-looking and in continuity with what you paint and draw in real life.
Aside from the time thing like you mentioned, digital art has it's perks in the area of money too; you do not waste precious (and usually expensive) art materials on things that are purely experimental or perhaps things that are practice. I find myself doing plenty of practice sketches in Paint Tool SAI rather than on my real drawing paper because I can just delete the bad ones without having wasted the paper that I don't have a chance to get very often. You can of course also resort to it when you do run out of stuff in real life for finished work, or just creating finished work with the programs simultaneous with the real work you make just for fun (something I also do.)
I'm not very good at making mine look traditional though. xD

Impeccably delineated and masterfully hued; the contours and texturing are so well choreographed that the overall effect is nearly sculptural; perfectly stunning, phenomenal work.
