My favorite Kitteh! Look how jealous I am of Brazil's currency! [link]

I kept a 10 Reais bill from when I went to visit in October, but it's got a macaw on it.

OMG how cool is Brazil?! Give me a jaguar any day over an old fossil. And I *like* Ben Franklin!! I'd prefer the macaw, too

Brazil is my future home! I've traveled quite extensively and I must say that Rio de Janeiro is the city where I have felt most at-home!

For us it's great! We're used to the Astronomical COL (especially in big urban centers like Miami)... For Latin America it's one of the highest.

A very strong impression gives this new one to me - rather of materialistic than of dreamlike quality; maybe your brush choice causes such an affect, maybe colours - purer than in original version, especially these deep red and hints of blue on the sharp edges of threads. Still first image keeps its flowing misty enchantment of a quiet shelter that may be found somewhere in dreams and attracts me so much.

joeyv7 In reply to john-n-mary [2012-10-19 06:04:35 +0000 UTC]

Interesting observation - perhaps the reaching hand and remote/somber expression add to that impression as well. This brush is great for traditional effects, but I can't recommend it for fine detail. I wanted to get away from the almost sweet, abstracted expression of the first one, and to *really* get away from the kittenish panther of the first one as well The first image does have it's charms . . . but in this one I basically wanted to correct some anatomical issues that were just too much for me, and to get Snape out of that sort of catsuit in the original and make him more realistic.

pythiadelphi [2012-10-08 17:44:11 +0000 UTC]

This is a beautiful reworking, although I must confess that I prefer the orange and mossy-green colouring on the original, as well as the angel shapes. Snape's pose is akin to that of a saint in the paintings of Old Masters, so the angels are apropos.

Nevertheless, there are wonderful details in this version that I adore, like the iridescent snake[?dragon] scales around the fringes, the clarity and contrast of the unicorn and the panther, and Snape's serene yet remorseful face.

Thanks, my friend. I have to say that the original coloring does have a certain charm that I was unable to translate here. I did lose the harpies because included in this version, it would have been too much going on, I think. The fluidity of the figure in the original was another thing I prefer to this version as well, but it's just too elongated and the stylization was just ended up looking really anatomically innaccurate to me in the end

pythiadelphi In reply to joeyv7 [2012-10-15 20:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, the harpies would definitely have overcrowded the new version.

What I love is that we're able to see clearly the progression of your skill and artistic vision. There is a surety and confidence in the lines of the newer drawing, especially in the rendering of the unicorn and panther, as well as the features and expression on Snape's face.

This reminds me of an illustration from an old book of fairytales that I have. Snape looks gentle and repentant. Is that a thestral I see on the left in the trunk? Lovely use of shading and color. Thanks for including the original. It was interesting to see how much your style has developed over the years. Beautiful work as always.

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I was going for that 'story book' sort of image He's definitely at peace here, in a dream. No thestral, although I considered replacing the unicorn with one, but . . . no

That's great to hear - I couldn't NOT put Snape with animals when I first started drawing him . . . so the improbable panther and unicorn are certainly part of a symbolic dreamscape

I removed it from my favorites, just so I could add it again! Such a wonderful job on this rework! All the time and effort was entirely worthwhile. It's just so delightful seeing your comfort level increase with the tools of the trade, and you coming into your own, but still retaining your distinct style. And of course, I need not mention the fantabulous beauty of the painting's subject, and his robes! Congrats!
