Heavens, I love this piece. This may be my favorite (well, one of my very favorites) of anything you've done. I love the intertwined influences. And the details, my God! The tree is like a combination of the Whomping Willow, an Ent, a blighted Tree of Heaven, and a nightmare all rolled into one. The claws and paws and werewolf face buried in the roots, reminders of that horrible Prank; the elvish or gargoyle figures peering and snarling and spying overhead; the gnarled-wood creature with its teeth sunk into Hedwig, whose talons are sunk into a mouse, while directly below them Snape reads from a book identifying that creature and mirroring the scene above; Harry stretching up to place his palm against (I assume) Snape's palm rising from the trunk, while Snape's suffering - or dead - face lies above, turned to wood - it's all gorgeous and fascinating. Every inch is embellished, a menacing dream with a dozen possible meanings and a promise of transcendence.

Which brings me to the "Above Vitebsk" image. It's beautiful. The shimmer of colors all around them, the intricacy of their flying, twisting robes, Snape's trailing hair, the happiness on their faces. The swirl of leaves and the way Snape lies on his back as if floating and Harry tumbles, windblown and outstretched as if catching the Snitch, except that his hand is simply waiting for the leaf to drift down.

I love it more every time I look at it. It's complex and haunting and a whole story unto itself. And I dearly wish, based on this, that someone would translate kasmunaut's fic into English.

Beautiful!
Is it "The Tree Book - Pages of Leaves"? - (my cod-Latin translation)
So many stories in my head about this, and I love your syle, the detail and textures.

Thanks a lot!

You're absolutely right, as I wrote a bit below, it's "On the trees: The book of woody pages" where title of ancient Columella's work on farming meets contemporary "yellow pages" (oh, my Latin is poor, maybe there's dozen of mistakes in five words).

I like the textures too, it's pastel paper.

Ooh, so beautiful! I read "Leaf by Niggle" when I was in my teens and had almost forgotten about it. Your details are astounding. I love the tree--I see a new face/figure in it each time I look. I haven't read the fic, and I'm a bit slow, so help me out with some questions here. The young man floating with Snape above--who is he? At first I thought I saw a scarred forehead, so I thought Harry. Then I noticed the tattered robes and the wolf paw soles on his shoes, so I thought Remus. Then I noticed what appeared to be a Death Eater tattoo on his forearm and I thought Regulus. Also, what does the print say in the book that Severus is reading?

Thank you very much!

This is Harry. Don't know where you see tatto, maybe it's shadow or paper structure? Also have no idea that robes can remind of Lupin but in HP universe I'm interested mostly in Snape - so please excuse me lack of canon details knowledge.

Although there's some hint on Lupin here - wolf head as part of the Willow, an imprint of an old fear.

The book is "On the trees: The book of woody pages" (where title of ancient Columella's work on farming meets contemporary "yellow pages") opened to the picture of the Whomping Willow - you can find a tree brunchhead which caught an owl, the successful mouse hunter.
