What a great capture for a first..congrats..makes me wonder if the filled panel in the wings serves a purpose..eye /edge recognition for flying through tighter areas perhaps..I have a lot of dragonfly images but I dont think I've even noticed it in any of the others..thanks again

It's a nice capture, but it looks kinda rough. You need to rework the composition, it seems random to me. Some post-processing would also be agreeable to soften the yellow tones (or alternatively emphasize them with some blue hues in the shadows) and ease the noise in the background. It's subtle but somehow irritating because of the raw look of the picture. The focus and lighting are excellent.

Thanks!
But dragonflies are really hard to capture, and i cant simply "move" them to get a good composition, and the yellow tones are because the sun was setting, not post processing.
The noise is really bad, i hope i can take pictures of dragonflies better in the future

Yes, but cropping gives you some post factum control over composition. Use that. As for the yellows, it's perfectly ok to have them, they just look raw to me. As well as the noise, although it's not *really* so bad.
And you're welcome.

Oops. Then lemme tell you my opinion (again) - it doesn't need so much empty space in top. Also, a bit more to the right would give the wing space to "breathe" - if this wasn't the end of the original cadre, that is, in which case there's nothing you can do.

Actually, what was said above is exactly why I like this picture. It has that quality of 'roughness' to it that comes from being the kind of image you either get, or don't get, when the shutter clicks.
Dragonflies are all zooming, swooping motion, and this is a moment of frozen zoom.
Please don't change a thing.

Actually dragonflies are a lot of patience, skill and only then - technical equipment.
What I am talking about is the difference between documentarism and art in photography. Merely half of the job is done with the well taken snapshot, the rest is the work you have to do at home to process the raw picture. Only then it becomes truly art. No offense, mate, but much to learn you still have

Great photograph! I love how the light glints off the wings and you can really see their structure.

Sometimes I wonder how those fragile wings carry them around so fast .

lapis-lazuri In reply to dannyovt [2013-03-22 08:43:22 +0000 UTC]
They are not as fragile as they look - given the size of the creature, that is. All those veins you see are really hard, although indeed easily breakable, but their great number and net-like structure strengthen them a lot. Also, don't forget the tiny weight of the animal. Compared to its size those wings are actually quite huge. No problem to lift it at all

Obrigado!
