Description Inspiration: season 4's episode Filli Vanilli.

Funny how some choices you make early in your life can define your tastes later...

I think I discovered Creedence Clearwater Revival when I was around 13-14 years old. But before that, my preference for the rock 'n roll classics actually started when I played a Chubby Checker CD my father had a few months before I discovered CCR.

Honestly, I'm not sure how or when I first heard of Roy Orbison, but it probably happened because I heard Oh, Pretty Woman playing on the radio. Then, one day, I was at a record store and I saw the album "Mystery Girl" on sale. So, I bought it, and the rest is history, as they say.

All that shaped my taste in music. I can't bring myself to like the music that's made today because of the quality, the groundbreaking techniques and the sheer talent of the artists of yesteryear.

And how did all that lead me to make this comic?

Well, after I discovered MLP, I immediately made a connection between The Big O and Fluttershy. Obviously, they don't have a lot of things in common - one of them being their appearances. Fluttershy is cute and pretty, while Roy, well, wasn't exactly photogenic. But I felt that they'd have one thing in common, and Filli Vanilli only confirmed it:

Stage Fright.

Orbison, despite being a rock 'n roll legend who had influenced artists like the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and U2's Bono Vox, and had admirers like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, suffered from severe stage fright throughout his career. That's why he alwars wore a pair of sunglasses when on stage - and that only happened because he broke his prescription glasses and the only pair he had were sunglasses. They helped him "isolate" himself from the audience.

Another thing that the episode confirmed - for me - was that both have great voices. Okay, it's ridiculous to compare a TV show's character's voice to a legendary musician's. But that, at least, helped me create this comic and feel a bit less guilty, so to say.

Seriously, if you never heard an Orbison song that wasn't Oh, Pretty Woman, then I recommend you to listen to Running Scared  and Crying .

And to wrap up this wall of text...

I don't think I'm learning how to make good comics.

Oh, I've been a fan of the Big O for years.

In fact, I've been cooking up an idea for a comic based on Running Scared, but I'm yet to figure out how to do it while doing justice to such an epic ballad.

Actually, thinking about it, I'm surprised Orbison wasn't noticed by the fandom at all.

I mean, at least three of his songs could inspire a sad comic/fanfic.

My mother just LOVED Roy Orbison. She had his greatest hits album; and as a kid, I must've heard those songs you've lived, and several others, about a hundred times.

But honest to God, I never knew that he suffered from stage fright, like Fluttershy did; and that those sunglasses he wore helped him fight his condition. I always thought he wore those sunglasses because he was blind!

Anyway, here's a couple of other songs where he's featured that I particularly like:

Yeah, he was also shy. But he wasn't morose. He actually had a good sense of humour.

And he wasn't blind. But he had poor eye-sight.

Speaking of songs, give "Wild Hearts" a listen. It's one of my favorites.

Not that I don't like some of today's music, at least from the less mainstream/popular music, like pony inspired music. But I certainly agree that most of that electronic synthesized style music all starts to sound similar after a while, at least from the same artist. As you allured to, musicians back then actually performed in real-time, together, and in synchronization. That requires a lot of talent.  Some of my fave eras are big band/swing and 80s rock.

Well, nice going with the idea of that singer, although I don't know him that well. Other than I know Milli Vanilli and its lipsyncing scandal.

When possible, give those two songs I mentioned in the description a listen.

Preferrably, with the sound upped to 11.

Hmm, I guess a trick like that, could make almost anyone feel more certainty.

If it worked for a legend, it can pretty much work for a pony as well. ^^

When you can, listen to Running Scared and Crying.

You'll see why Roy is one of the greatest singers of all time.

I know, I've heard most of his work, mainly because my father is a huge fan, and he listens to his music all the time.

Well, tell your father he has all my respect. ^^
