She's nice when off-duty, but she can't exactly play favorites when it comes to choosing potential new Wonderbolts.

Naturally in Celestia's military, the hotter you are, the faster you move through the ranks.

She was assuming the role of training instructor. They must be effective and make sure the trainees are disciplined and ready. Outside relations be damned.

More like she was being professional and knew she couldn't play favorites. And knowing what Dash is capable of knew she had to be tougher on her.

She wasn't even a quarter as nasty as she could have been. After I saw the episode, I was actually very pleased and genuinely impressed with how, really, she hadn't bastardised the recruits at all, as it would have been entirely too easy for the writers to make her into a total arse. Sure she gave them a bit of stick initially, but it became clear as the episode progressed that had pretty much been just a formality, and Spitfire was far more interested in putting the recruits through their paces than making them scrub toilets with tooth brushes or whatever...
As my friend put it, in this episode Spitfire was hard, but fair... very fair, in fact... Gunnery Sergeant Hartman she ain't...

I hope you don't think im bashing the episode or the character? Because I'm not.
Sometimes it hard to tell with a big of a fandom as this and it being written.

I was just pointing out that Spits wasn't really being a Drill Sergeant Nasty during the episode. That has no bearing on whether your post was intended for "bashing" purposes or not. Equally it is difficult to tell whether any given post is being negative for the sake of being negative or not.

Ok. But Spit was still being Drill Sargent nasty. Just not nasty nasty. More level headed nasty.

Drill sergeants have to be. You can't motivate your troops to reach their max potential with sweet-talking, right?

I think a phoenix cutie mark is pretty awesome, myself; not many ponies get something that sets itself on fire to protect its chicks, can renew itself when it gets old, and basically lives forever as the symbol of their special talent.

Civwub In reply to Emperordaniel [2012-12-15 19:27:45 +0000 UTC]
Oh, im not denying the idea of it being a phoenix isnt cool. But that is if that is what it really is. It just strikes me as odd that Hasbro wouldnt opt for the fanon adopted cutie mark.
Im interested to see what the mark actually is, and if we are right. There has to be a story behind it if it really is a phoenix. Something so unique yet clearly powerful. Maybe a follow up episode Plus seeing Sparks as a filly would be pretty damn adorable.

I don't know about the writers, but the animators, story board artists, ect. aren't allowed to look at fan-made stuff whilst working there. that's probably why her cutie mark isn't the fan-made one. Faust said something about that a while back.

Hasbro legally cannot use the fanon adopted cutiemark. It's the same reason Derpy will never be a mail pony.

Hasbro's made quite a few fanon items canon. There's no law preventing it.

It depends if it would be considered copyright. Something from fanon that's just generally accepted and hasn't got an obvious original source is one thing, but if the fanon comes from an artist or writers work then that would be copyright the original writer and Hasbo could be sued. Using a fan made cutiemark would be a no as the artist who came up with the cutiemark would have copyright. Fan names tend to be fine as names are normally not considered copyright unless trademarks, plus who knows who first decided on names like Derpy and Lyra?

Duckbro In reply to Geminii27 [2012-12-16 21:13:42 +0000 UTC]
there isn't a law preventing it, but the law causes a metric fuckton of paper/legal work to be done when making a fan made piece part of the actual series. also, from my count they've made derpy, DJ-Pon3 and lyra canon and lyra and vinyl only in toy form. Even then their team of lawyers had to pull together a lot of stuff in order to be able to do that without the original creators trying to claim any form of ownership which would require them to pay a large sum of money to the original creators. Like I said, there isn't a law preventing it, but there are laws that make it difficult to do.

Seeing the story behind that cutie mark would definitely be great - if not an episode (which would be best), I bet there'll be a fanfiction sooner or later with that subject. And filly Spitfire would probably turn the cute-o-meter up to eleven.
