Holly secures the riding helmet on her head and clambers up the mounting block alongside Cloverpatch. She has the advantage of having watched Nadia already getting onto the horse's back , and with the added instructions that Claire gives her, she easily mounts him and settles herself into the saddle.

"Uhh... it's high up here, Claire, I'm not sure about this," Holly says nervously.

"Remember when you were learning to ride a bike, right?" Claire says as she pats Cloverpatch and murmurs words to him that she hopes will soothe him further for Holly's sake. "It's kinda the same... your muscles in your legs, butt, and stomach will soon know what to do. But when you first get on, it's strange and weird, so don't worry. I'll go really slow and you can get used to that." She watches Holly's face intently to check that her friend is not likely to freak out just yet. Feeling confident that Holly is okay, she urges Cloverpatch to take a few steps forward. "Keep hold of the reins but if you think you're going to fall, first thing is to lean forward and grasp Cloverpatch with your arms. That'll lower your centre of gravity and make you less unbalanced, and you'll also have something to steady yourself. Now... we're going to take a few more steps but at a walking pace, and I'll keep going around the yard if you're okay with it. Be aware of what your bum and your thigh muscles are doing, okay, and sort of go with the rhythm not against it. Ready?"

Holly looks down at Claire and nods with a grim expression, in answer to which Claire begins to lead Cloverpatch around the courtyard at a slow walking pace.

Nadia, meanwhile, has moved into the corner of the yard so that she is not in the way at all and she props herself up on a barrel. "You go, Holly!" she cheers. "It's really easy, and when you get used to it, it feels awesome!"

Xiulan steps up beside Nadia and cannot take her eyes off her girlfriend on the horse's back. She wants to shout out encouragement, too, but Nadia is doing a good job of that by herself and Xiulan feels it would be out of character for her to shout out such things. She hopes that her keen following of Holly's circuits around the yard and the look of pride mixed with concern will show Holly she is fully there supporting her.

Claire continues leading Holly around the enclosed area. Each time she passes the two girls in the corner they can see that Holly is looking more relaxed and comfortable. On the third lap, a smile is even beginning to appear on her lips.

As the fourth lap is made, Holly has broken out into a large grin and Claire brings Cloverpatch to a stop with Holly facing the other two girls. "You're right, Nadia... I think I've got it now," Holly says from on top of Cloverpatch. "And yes, it's a great feeling. It feels like I'm in tune with him and we're moving as one. I can't believe I've put it off this long. I should've done this aaaages ago so I'd be galloping about the fields by now!"

"Come on, then," Claire says and leads Cloverpatch to the mounting block so that Holly can dismount.

"Oh, I thought we were going around the yard again!" Holly cries out in dismay. "Can we go one more time? Puh-lease?"

Claire raises her eyebrows at her friend and laughs after several seconds of looking at Holly's expression of earnest appeal. "Okay, okay! Let's go around once more!" she relents, and urges Cloverpatch into walking one more perimeter of the yard.
