This time, the hot bath relief is not working as well as it did the previous couple of times so Holly shouts to summon her mother.

"Mum..." she says as her mother arrives and kneels at the side of the bathtub. "This is awful. It's really uncomfortable. And painful."

Holly's mother, Jennifer, takes hold of her daughter's hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze. "It means you're not a child anymore, love. See it like a good thing, yes? You don't want to be a little kid for ever, now do you?"

"Well..." Holly considers what she is losing and pauses a moment. She comes to the conclusion that it will be great to become an adult just like her big sister Kate and tells herself that even if it is scary and horrible at times, it is a good thing.

"But I hate this!" her receding childhood protests in a futile gesture. "And I'm gonna have to go through it for the rest of my life!"

Jennifer chuckles kindly and smiles at Holly. "Not quite that long, darling. Only 'til you're about fifty or so."

Holly groans with despair.

Jennifer stands up and looks down at her daughter fondly. "Now, I'll go downstairs so you can get out and dry yourself off. And when you come down, I'll have a hot cup of tea and some fresh scones waiting for you. Okay?"

Holly looks up and gives a faint, wry smile. "Yeah, I guess."

As her mother walks to the door and leaves the room, Holly whispers a quiet but heartfelt "Thanks, Mum."
