Description Gemma takes one step into the women's toilet facilities located in the Mettleham Abbey grounds and stops when she sees what is inside. "Maddie!" she calls back to her friend outside. "There's two stalls in here and they're both free."

Madeleine Forrester lowers her phone and barely takes any time at all to begin making her way inside behind Gemma. "Don't mind if I do!" she says as Gemma enters the first stall and she the further one.

The girls each set about attending to their own private business but they keep up the conversation while doing so.

"Maddie..." Gemma changes the current subject they have been discussing. "I've been thinking about when we met Ella earlier on . You don't think she's going to come back to our school when she's done her community service thing, do you? I mean, I don't want to sound like a hater or anything but, you know, it's been brilliant at school with her gone. I never noticed the effect she had on the class while she was there but now she's left... well, you know?"

"Hmmmm, y-e-s . . ." Maddie says thoughtfully. "I know what you mean. It's like when my cousin, Philip, you know Philip, right?" She pauses and waits for a response from Gemma, which is a grunt of agreement that may have been accompanied by a nod but their being in two separate stalls prevents her from getting any visual confirmation. Maddie continues: "So, like, he stole some rare eggs---I think they were from a red kite---when he was twelve and he had to do some community service---just like Ella---but not picking up litter but going into old people's homes and helping with stuff there and he had to do it for, like, two hundred hours in total or something and it took him an epic long time---almost all of his summer holidays and well into the start of his second year at senior school---and he was also taken to, like, psychological training that taught him how valuable wildlife is and it made him, uh, appreciate wildlife more, and then he..." Maddie goes on but almost immediately at the start Gemma has recognized the tell-tale signs that her best friend is about to go off on one of her now-legendary Maddie Tales and so she has tuned out Maddie's fantasy, instead turning her attention to her Lemur Sanctuary app until she hears Maddie is winding down her imagination and returning to reality.

"That's fascinating, Maddie, but what about Ella? I don't like saying it but I really do hope she doesn't friggin'-well come back to St Tibb's," Gemma expresses her worry that is still on her mind despite the story Maddie launched into. "I don't know where else she'd go, though. I couldn't ever imagine seeing her at Richard Wells." Gemma stops and laughs loudly. "Haha! Imagine her in a Richard Wells uniform ! Ohmygod, that would be absolute burn for her!"

"Yeah, I doubt she'd ever go there," Maddie agrees. "For her that would be like, I dunno, like... picking up mouldy leaves from the gutters and having to eat them for lunch. Something like that, anyway."

Gemma giggles at Maddie's comparison. "Hehe! So true. Where'd you come up with that image, man?"

Maddie shrugs (even though she knows Gemma cannot see her do this). "I don't know. My imagination sometimes comes up with the craziest stuff at times. It rarely happens but when it does it's awesome, right?"

Gemma puts plenty of effort into suppressing a large guffawing laugh she feels compelled to give in reply to Maddie's lack of self-awareness. She barely manages to keep it in and does her best to deliver a measured response to her friend's claim: "Yes, that's you all over, Maddie."

The girls continue chatting about other things as they do their business but never reach a conclusion on whether or not Ella Winford-Ashe will return to St Tibb's High School after her community service is done.

They finish, wash their hands, make themselves presentable to the world again, and re-emerge from the toilet facilities, ready to learn more about the lives of the monks who once lived and worked at Mettleham Abbey.
