Felicity steps across the threshold into the form room. At a quick estimation, she guesses that, except for a few absentees, almost the whole form is present, including Mrs Wharton, who is at her desk and removing various pieces of paperwork from her bag.

Felicity moves forward, Amanda still holding her hand behind her, and a few classmates turn to look in their direction. A couple of those who look over see that Amanda is wearing something that almost certainly signifies she is concealing a bikini underneath, and a ripple of whispers spreads around the room, with all eyes eventually turning to look at the two newcomers, the one at the back being the prime focus.

Mrs Wharton looks up from the papers she has laid on her desk. "Just in time, Miss Byron, Miss Hetherington, with eleven seconds to spare by my estimation," she says and watches Felicity and Amanda make their way to their usual places at the front and centre of the room.

What amazes Felicity most, as she steps aside to let Amanda pass to her usual seat on the left, is how calm and quiet Mrs Wharton is being. On her initial survey of the room, Felicity saw at least three girls sitting at their desks clearly wearing bikinis. There may have been more but she is certain of at least three. And now that Amanda is here, that makes a guaranteed four.

Amanda pulls her chair out and sits down after glancing nervously around the room. Almost everyone is watching her, with several girls here and there whispering to their neighbours while gesturing in Amanda's direction. She, too, spots the obviously bikini-clad classmates and begins to wonder. Felicity follows and also pulls out her chair and sits down just as the signal to indicate the start of Registration Period sounds over the school's PA system.

The murmured whispering that had been circulating around the classroom lowers in volume and essentially stops, and Mrs Wharton stands up straight and takes in the whole room, her eyes pausing a fraction of a second longer on those girls present who are daring to wear swimwear. Is that a slight flicker of a smile at the corner of her lips?

She finishes her scan of the room and there are a couple of seconds filled with expectant silence: almost surely everyone is waiting to see what her response will be to those choosing to test the alleged loophole found in the No Uniform guidelines.

But there is nothing and Mrs Wharton turns to a sheet of paper on her desk which everyone in the room knows from experience is the list of names currently making up form 8W. She picks up a pen. "Becker, Vicki," she announces, reading the first name on the list. Vicki Becker answers with the required "Here, Miss!" after a slight pause to look around the room uncertainly, and there is a collective sigh of relief as it becomes clear that taking the attendance register is now underway and Mrs Wharton, for reasons unknown as yet, is apparently not going to address the obvious 'elephant in the room' at this moment.
