Holly watches Emily-Jane's t-shirt removal floorshow but does not get involved in shouting or cheering her classmate on even though she can appreciate the amount of strength and courage it must have taken for the very shy girl to do this.

Standing in the doorway after Claire has rushed forward to join in with the congratulations being offered to Emily-Jane, Holly feels a hand on her shoulder and turns immediately to see Xiulan smiling at her. She has a curious look on her face, frowning at what all the commotion is about.

"What event did I miss, Holly?" Xiulan asks, standing on tiptoes and peering over to the crowd gathering around Emily-Jane.

"It's Emily. She was in a tee-shirt with a bikini underneath and everyone was cheering for her to take it off, and that's what she's just done. You know how shy she is so I guess this is a big thing for her. Everyone's been lovely and supportive and everything. It was nice to see, actually, instead of any bitchiness going on," Holly explains, glancing very quickly at both Madeleine Forrester and Penelope Cornwell, who would be her prime suspects for spewing any of that bitchiness.

Her gaze returns to Xiulan's face, staring intently and admiring every inch of her girlfriend's features. The misery that crept up on her this morning is momentarily forgotten as she becomes lost in the beauty she sees before her. She reaches out and takes Xiulan's hand. "I'm so glad to see you, Xiu," she says just loud enough to be heard over the rest of the form continuing to celebrate Emily-Jane's t-shirt removal. "I've had a f--" She stops as she realizes she was about to swear, checking herself as she remembers how much Xiulan hates to hear cursing, especially from Holly. "I've had a horrible morning so far," she amends her sentence. "It's a hundred times better now you're here, though."

Xiulan places her own hand over Holly's. "Why are you having a bad mood on this morning? Can I be a help of you?" she asks, her voice full of concern.

Holly sighs. "You're helping merely by being here, Xiu. But... tch! Everyone else so far is either mincing about in expensive clothes or flaunting their curves in a bikini. And look at me!" She glances down at herself before looking back up at Xiulan. "Neither of those things are me, and I don't usually let it bother me, as you know, but... I dunno... I'm just feeling like a total frump this morning and it's got me down." She shrugs without much conviction. "Maybe it's hormones or something."

"Holly! I will tell you again: You are the most beautiful girl and..." Xiulan pauses briefly to look around her, checking to see if anyone is taking any notice of them. "... and I love you very much," she whispers loud enough for Holly to hear, followed by a big smile when she sees that her words have had the effect she intends.

Holly's face softens, the hardness that had taken hold while describing herself and her current mood dissolving from what Xiulan has just said. She smiles and gently squeezes her girlfriend's hand. "Thanks," she says. "I love you, too," she adds in a similar whisper to Xiulan's.

Right now, more than anything, all Holly wants to do is throw her arms around Xiulan and hold her tight, feel her warmth, smell her fragrance, and snuggle into her to regain strength and happiness, but she dare not. Standing in the doorway to her form room and visible to everyone in the room, no one could miss an intimate embrace, and their carefully curated secret would be out in an instant and around the school not too long after. While Holly feels less personal concern about people knowing she and Xiulan are in a relationship, and this feeling has increased as the weeks have gone by since they first got together, keeping things under wraps for Xiulan's sake is still a very high concern. Knowing how old-fashioned and traditional Xiulan's grandmother is, it would not surprise Holly if, after news of their relationship ever got to her grandmother, this caused drastic action: A ban on Xiulan ever seeing Holly again or something equally horrendous. While it would not surprise her if this were to happen, the consequences would destroy her, so keeping things quiet and secret remains a priority in how she conducts herself in public places when Xiulan is there.

Regretfully but knowing she is risking discovery the longer the two of them continue standing this way, she pulls her hand back from the warmth and softness of Xiulan's own, and glances over her shoulder to see if anyone noticed the contact. She is grateful to see that Emily-Jane's t-shirt reveal is still the main attraction and everybody's focus is on that.

Out of the corner of her eye, walking along the corridor to room 116, Holly spots their form mistress. How much did Mrs Wharton see? Did she notice the affectionate hand-holding that was taking place? No, Miss couldn't have seen that, Holly tells herself. It would've looked like me and Xiu were just talking from that direction. I hope.

"Good morning, Miss Zheng," Mrs Wharton says as she approaches and encounters Xiulan first. "Good morning, Miss Hewson," she adds as she gets nearer.

"Good morning, Mrs Wharton!" Holly and Xiulan respond, and then step aside to allow the teacher into the room.

Holly watches as Mrs Wharton walks past and enters the room, and she cannot be sure if there was a knowing smirk on Mrs Wharton's lips as she greeted her, hinting that she has worked out whom Holly has been referring to in their private counselling sessions discussing Holly's newly-emerging sexuality.

One more reason it is a relief that the six weeks away from school and all that it entails are starting tomorrow.
