Hypothesis:I really have just one original character, and my gallery is a result of failed attempts to reproduce it over the years.
But in all honesty, this is something that's been bugging me recently. I have difficulty drawing my own characters consistently! I don't know if this is the reason I keep making one shot characters or just a result of the practice.

Maybe if I practice drawing crappy manga I will get better at this.

You've pretty much done the advice I've been giving lately: just lay down.
But yeah, drawing one's own characters consistently seems to be a challenge!
I can't draw all that well myself, but it feels like even a slight change of angle results in a new character to appear. It's frstrating to say the least. It's all about experimenting and messing around with different things, you know. Even if it does take years. That's one of the [many] pains of art.

I feel your pain. That's why I fudge and use 3D renders as a "base" sometimes.
