Description I hope this is helpful.

It's hard to write a tutorial like this since some of my knowledge is purely observation based. By making this tutorial, I think i actually learn more about hands and how to avoid some of my own lazy habits/mistakes

...that said, in no way am I perfect with drawing hands, and there's a chance I've made some mistakes. So while you may learn some techniques from this tutorial, always look to real life for accuracy and correction

Also in NO WAY is this tutorial a complete or exhausted study of hands. If I was prepping for a class or book it would be a different story, but It's not reasonable for me to spend that kind of time on a net tutorial

As some of you have pointed out: Not ALL hands will conform to generic proportions. Real hands, just like bodies, won't always have the same proportions, have variations, and quirks. I in fact have crooked fingers but all the variations are kinda beyond the scope of this tutorial, but do know they are out there!

The Golden Ratio is based off the Fibonacci numbers. It's an fascinating thing, found through-out nature living and non-living. It's also linked to aesthetics (proof that math is beautiful).

All the hands above belong to me and many are from my own art pieces. So please do Not use them as Stock, as this is just for educational purposes.

This tutorial took a LOT of time. So please be respectful and let me know if you want to use it for something Chances are I'm totally cool with it! If there is something I didn't cover and you really want to know more about it... you can inquire about it.

Basically what N7xStealthxOP said It's a measurement found throughout nature in living and non-living things. The clearest example is a snail-shell. The curve of that shell grows slowly in proportion to that ratio number. The shape of galaxies also curve to the same ratio, as well as the human body is proportioned to this ratio. It's a common thread in nearly everything, and is said to be closely linked to what people find beautiful.

It's very interesting stuff, you can google it for more information

Thanks! I don't really have the eye for that stuff; I thought i could use it as a number to help get my lengths right. *facepalm*

it some sort of measurement with EVERY size of anything in the WHOLE NATURE,
from what i've read on it so far, insect build nests with the exact same size in certain way's (nest hight compared to nest depth, stuff like that, i mean look at a bees nest, how do they get all the holes the exact same size, scientists say it has to do with the golden ratio) and apparantly if you measure a lot of stuff on your own body, compare it another part of your body or split it by the number comparison(something like that) the outcome should be the golden ratio. basically it's nature's guideline to build, hope it helps a bit

I've done a couple of quick sketches (which I will consider posting).
The tutorial is very useful
I particularly like the contrast between men and women, and all the reference sketches.. and the evil monster hand obviously X)

Kisukes-Shinigami In reply to ??? [2012-03-12 01:37:10 +0000 UTC]

The middle finger to palm thing doesn't always work (Only reason I know this is because my and my father's hands have long palms and short fingers). Especially with the Golden Ratio in mind. But, something that IS always true is that people's hands, from the edge of their palm to the tip of their middle finger, is proportionate to their face from chin to just above the temple.

REALLY good hand tutorial though. Certainly helped me. (even though I "forget" to draw the pinky...most times)

JohnYume In reply to Kisukes-Shinigami [2012-04-14 16:36:54 +0000 UTC]

Ah thanks for the info! Yeah these measurements aren't true for each and every person ^u^ I would have added that bit about the face/hand comparison (a very helpful tip) but I was hoping to make more tutorials to include a more overall anatomy ratio tips :3

Kisukes-Shinigami In reply to JohnYume [2012-04-14 18:33:18 +0000 UTC]

And that's a good one.
Hand/face, two of your head (height wise) can fit in your torso (shoulder to hip). Shoulders are always just BARELY thinner than the hips, elbows always come just below the waist (or thinnest part of your torso). Stuff life that.
I have no idea how to measure up feet though. They seem to be completely random xD
And I do love your tutorials. Very helpful indeed.

JohnYume In reply to KiraVonMeow [2011-12-23 01:02:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I can see that ouo;; it's a lot to take in... I kinda tried fit in all the aspects about hands into one tutorial. If it's too much to take in, you can try reading it in parts on different days. Try to understand each part as it is, but don't worry if you "get it" all or not. Just learn what you can from it and apply it to your next drawing ouo
