Description
I hope this is helpful. It's hard to write a tutorial like this since some of my knowledge is purely observation based. By making this tutorial, I think i actually learn more about hands and how to avoid some of my own lazy habits/mistakes
...that said, in no way am I perfect with drawing hands, and there's a chance I've made some mistakes. So while you may learn some techniques from this tutorial, always look to real life for accuracy and correction
Also in NO WAY is this tutorial a complete or exhausted study of hands. If I was prepping for a class or book it would be a different story, but It's not reasonable for me to spend that kind of time on a net tutorial
As some of you have pointed out: Not ALL hands will conform to generic proportions. Real hands, just like bodies, won't always have the same proportions, have variations, and quirks. I in fact have crooked fingers
The Golden Ratio is based off the Fibonacci numbers. It's an fascinating thing, found through-out nature living and non-living. It's also linked to aesthetics (proof that math is beautiful).
All the hands above belong to me and many are from my own art pieces. So please do Not use them as Stock, as this is just for educational purposes.
This tutorial took a LOT of time. So please be respectful and let me know if you want to use it for something

Thank you for the request. I actually really struggle with perspective when it comes to the human body, so I don't really have enough tips/advice to make a tutorial. I would recommend using photographs as a reference, because looking up at someone/something often skews anatomy. You can take photos of figures and dolls (I have used my sister's KH figures for reference) or pics of yourself or others. There is also stock images on DA or elsewhere online of looking up at someone from below. Using references is what I do when I have no idea how to draw a character from a certain angle. I'm sorry I can't be of much more help. Best of luck to you <3

I've been looking at different hand tutorials and whenever I tried doing different hand gestures it never looked right. Trying this method sure made things a lot easier! ^.^

No matter your disadvantage, you can always turn it into something that can help or strengthen you :3
Long crooked fingers have a lot of story and character to them, so in a way you got an advantage when drawing interesting and fanciful hands

Oh, where do you find your photo references?
π: 0 β©: 1
JohnYume In reply to geekygamergirl121 [2013-02-17 21:05:49 +0000 UTC]
I actually make nearly all of my photo references (included the ones shown above) because I'll want very specific poses for my art
But if you don't want to use yourself as the model or you want to "see" other hand types, you can search for "stock" & "hands" on DA. Or look up "hands" on: www.sxc.hu
Just be sure to give credit to your sources if you do

That makes sense, I was just wondering if there was a website or something. I'm working on making more complex poses too so I need references more often. Thanks.
