Description
Advice, Critique, Suggestions are welcomed.I apologize for not Livestreaming this one. I just didn't want any feedback/criticism while I was working this time. I tried some new things and wanted the freedom to struggle, fudge-around, and discover for myself. I paid far more attention to skin-tone and coloration in this one, though all the special effects and lighting drowned everything out in blue and pink tones. But I think for the better ouo
This one took a long while, mostly because I could only work on it a few hours here and there each day.
Anyhow, long over-due Howl fanart. Believe it or not I actually like Howl's Moving Castle more than Ponyo, I just haven't drawn anything decent enough to post it. It's really hard to do art of a series that has SO MUCH beautiful work already ;u;

*EDIT* I edited his ear, nose, mouth, and nail just a bit (though it's not super obvious)

8'O Simply stunning! The colors are so enchanting, and Howl's expression is very alluring. I love how soft his skin looks and how you made his lips actually appear glossy. :') You did an AMAZING job on this, well done!!!

Thank you so much for your kind words The lips were quite a bit of work, haha, it's hard making lips look believable AND good-looking (or in this case glossy
)

Wow. I really like him. The way you did the hair is amazing! It's etheral and flowing around.
I also like Moving Castle above other Ghiblis (but Spirited away is not bad either).

This is positively beautiful. I love the little magical stars floating over his face which tie into the starry background. Which, by the way, is a beautiful backdrop which frames his face and is a nice detail to appreciate when you notice it's actually his jacket.
His eyes are gorgeously intense with the two-tone blue for his irises, and the whites of his eyes have a nice dark shadow under the lids and eyelashes which given lovely contrast to the bright highlights over the curve of his eyes and the bottom along the bottom lids.
His hair is also beautifully stylized with a combination of clusters and individual strands and the part in his hair had been paid special attention to, for sure.
As for where I can point out s few rough spots, the fingernail on his middle finger seems a bit off as if it's not big or long enough, but not by much. His left ear looks a little too far back on his head for the angle of his face, and his nose and mouth seem a little bit small, but again, not by much. However all of those were very small details that I had to look hard to notice.
Your choice of lighting and color is nice and the shadows on his skin look great, but maybe a little bit more attention to his clothes might be nice. However, this is a nit-picky detail that also can very with opinion because the slightly more muted shadows on his shirt don't distract form his face.
Overall, this piece is positively gorgeous. You captured the magical, pretty boy feature of Howl as well as adding a lovely sense of mystery that also surrounds him. Any mistakes were small and hard to notice, and the rest is absolutely gorgeous and well done!
P.S. Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite Hayao Miyazaki movie. ^^

Thank you for that wonderful and insightful critique It makes me so happy to see someone noticing all the little details I added in ;u;
I honestly was unsure if I could edit it, but I did manage to edit the ear, nose, mouth, and nail as you suggested. I was really worried that the alteration would cause disruption elsewhere, but it seems alright I re-loaded the altered version if you want to see
I made the shirt muted for that exact reason haha, though it was a difficult choice. Originally I was going to paint everything in glorious detail (including the jacket and shirt), but I decided to go with the concept of him "coming out" of his dark portal and the stars. I played and tinkered a lot with the amount of fading in and out, of both extremes. The results were what I felt was a good amount of detail without over-powering his face while still framing it. I'm not saying it couldn't be done with different yet equally nice results though I almost need/want 2 versions of this
Howl's Moving Castle is definitely one of, if not, my favorite Miyazaki movie. It's hard to have a fav though, since there are so many lovely movies. Still Howl's Moving Castle is one of those movies that you watch when you're sick or had a bad day and makes you feel so much better
Once again, thank you for your wonderful and kind words. I truly apperciate it

Thank you. I recently wrote a journal about critiquing and then took a look at my inbox. I saw your picture, decided to see it more closely, and noticed you wanted a critique on it. I could not resist.
I see the edits and they look good! Now his features look more delicate and rather than small.
Ah, yes. The dilemma that gets to the best of us: How much is too much? XD However, I agree. with your skill, either way would have been amazing.
And thanks to you, my friend!

Okay, I'm definitely fangirling over the eyes and the hair ;A; <3
But I think the knuckles look a bit too square, and his left ear looks a bit odd to me... .w."

I'm glad you like the hair and eyes ;u; <3 <3 <3
The ear gave me a lot of trouble, so I'm not too suprised by this o3o I'll see if I can do anything about it. It's really hard to edit anatomy at this point without everything getting really messy ;3;
