A diagram summarizing the relationship between different types of elemental magic. The arrows represent "overpowering" - each element has one element that they overpower, and another that overpowers them.
This overpowering may present itself as either absorption, corruption or invulnerability, though this also depends on the strength of each spell. These rules don't always follow our regular physics to a T, but they shouldn't be completely ignored either.
For instance, an extremely powerful Mind magician *can* overpower weak Metal spells.
It's like some sort of tenfold magical rock paper scissors.

Light and Darkness remain out of the circle, being capable of overpowering all of the other elements. The relationship between these two is the most complex by far, and seems to depend on a whole bunch of strange factors. Some scholars believe that there is a slight tendency for Light to respond more strongly to defensive spells, while Darkness responds better to offensive spells. However, most of these scholars have been shown to be more affiliated with Light magicians, so the credibility of this theory is up for debate.
