The more "firepower the west throw" the more support extremists gain. This is perfectly working circle of violence. First terrorists launch attacks against civilians and government to provoke their strike-back against civilian people that possibly may support terrorists, as result suppressed civilians give support to extremists, join their forces and soon we have full scale endless war.

Hell, they WANT the West to kill a bunch of civilians with a drone strike.Β Its how they get cannon fodder and suicide bombers - some random Arab suffers a loss that can be blamed on the evil west (rightly or wrongly, doesn't matter) and happily go out to 'strike a blow' against those that hurt them.Β And somebody sits back and basks in the power that all these people give him (almost always a him in this case).Β Its a cycle of violence that only benefits the people that sit behind the scenes.
You might notice that the actual leaders of ISIS have not exactly been advertising who they are, using pseudonyms to broadcast their propaganda (which has led to nutjob conspiracy theories that ISIS is actually run by the CIA and/ or Mossad).Β But a disguise and a fake name makes it harder to find you and kill you, and if everything goes south on you, walk away to try again later; its just the cannon fodder of regular people that get dead.Β But if it works - or at least while it works - you get to tell a bunch of people what to do, you send people to fight and die, you get loot and slave wives, and you get talked about internationally (even if indirectly, you know they are talking about you) - its like a teenage jerk off fantasy on a giant scale.
Theory is that the top people are a mixture of assholes.Β Some are true religious nuts, but many are former Ba'ath party (who didn't actually give two shits about Islam, it was just a tool for them), top military people from Saddam's regime, and even probably some guys who escaped the regime changes in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya.Β It also explains why ISIS sometimes seems uncertain of what to do - there is internal friction as the various top people struggle to be on the top of the heap.Β When things stall - but not drastically reverse - there will be increased friction as people try to say "I could do it better if I was in charge".
The Islam angle is mostly bullshit.Β Its there for public consumption and to control the common people (ye olde opiate of the masses).Β Oh sure, the top guys may claim to be Muslim, pray when they are supposed to, and so on.Β But mobsters claim to be good Catholics, the IRA claimed to be good Catholics, the Nazis were Christian, Hitler was a Catholic... Its easy to claim to have faith, maybe even believe you do, but ignore it when it becomes inconvenient, or use some bullshit to justify why "do not kill" doesn't apply.Β In the end its about benefiting them, not anyone else, and certainly not God or Allah.
