These are the guys that George "Wanker" Bush should've gone after.
But NOOOoooooo... we had to go after the anti-christian oil-field controlling dictator
Ffffffff......

Saddam was paying the families of Suicide Bombers $2000 every time they blew them selves up, killed non believers. He WANTED MWD's his people lied to him about what he had because they were afraid they would be executed if they admitted they had little success. Saddam was trying to fund terrorism. What we should have done is to ignore U.N Regs, international law and just Whacked him with a 50 Caliber Barrett.
But instead, we decided to follow the rules of War. Guess what. There really isn't any when they are trying to exterminate you.

Still it makes more sense to go after the actual organization that attacked us than to go after another country with loose ties to them.

On one hand, yes, a surgical strike would have been effective, but on the other hand, we would need to project force in the mideast to clean up a mess that WE (the US) made.  However, George W Bush ignored military advisers and micromanaged the initial attack into a tar pit.  Oh, and there's also Mr. "You go to war with the army you have" Rumsfeld...when you're on the aggressive end, you take the time to set up your troops appropriately...you know, with body armor.

Sometimes.... I try and think about this. I really do. I try and wrap my head around just what the heck are people thinking over there. Just what. And I just don't understand.

And I know people say there is no understanding it, and yeah it's probably impossible, but I just can't help but .... wish I knew, you know?

Hhhhhhhh.

Sometimes I just can't take off the rose colored glasses.

Thanks for this chuckle. I needed it.

They don't do this for the west, they do it for their own followers, to show how "strong" they are and keep them motivated. They don't actually care about the west except as a propaganda tool.

And yet, the Muslim nation had this 300 year period in history when they advanced mathematics, medicine, and even tolerated other faiths.  They seriously need another one of those.

My sentiments exactly.   So few people realize just how much of modern society we owe to the Arabics (algebra, the scientific method, the continued survival of the most famous of Greek and Roman writings, gardening for beauty and meditation rather than just vegetables and herbs, surgery, free public education, and a whole bunch of other stuff I can't even remember right now).  While the Europeans were busy burning witches and not bathing during the so-called "Dark Ages," the Middle East was in the midst of a Golden Age of Reason, a Renaissance that far exceeded the impact of the much later Italian one.  I seriously wish that Baghdad could once again be one of the great intellectual capitals of the world.

turbosuo In reply to DolphinSilverwolf [2014-09-24 17:03:11 +0000 UTC]

Yet it was Al-Ghazali who rejected the logic taught by the likes of Aristotle and Plato (which was very popular at the time) on the grounds that they were non-believers therefore were fundamentaly wrong.  His influence effectively removed the logic that had built that golden age you are talking about for the very reason this cartoon states.  He didn't care if they were right or wrong, if they made simple observations, he did not like them because they weren't Muslims.  This was backed up even more by people who would later claim (as he himself claimed) he was a reviver of Islam and should be trusted implicitly with matters of faith.  In fact anyone that irked him he derided leading to Sunni's and Shia being the majority and other Muslim (I guess denominations would be the correct word) being pushed into obscurity.  So I think you are both right.  Logic is the enemy of religious fanaticism.  But when logic is a fundamental part of said dogma, it can be a very powerful force of good.

Nature abhors a vacuum comes to mind when I see these extremists.  With the Al-Qaida people saying that ISIS/IS are extreme, even for them, it makes me wonder what will happen when these individuals are bombed into the sands.  Will we see even more radical people that are cutting off heads, wearing faces as masks, and just absolute deplorable acts of violence that make video and movie gore/violence seem trifle?

Why do you think ISIS even exists in the first place? America and her allies have a history of creating the world's next terrorists.

ProcrastinatingStill In reply to Pen1tence [2014-09-14 00:13:05 +0000 UTC]

ISIS exists because of religious fanaticism (which isn't the first time Islam spawned people like them). As long as there are fundies, there will be terrorists.

Pen1tence In reply to ProcrastinatingStill [2014-09-14 18:25:17 +0000 UTC]

Without wanting to sound pretensious, you need to examine the problem of ISIL with a multifaceted approach. There are plenty of reasons they have grown in power, some more important than others.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ProcrastinatingStill In reply to Pen1tence [2014-09-14 19:01:55 +0000 UTC]

The reason why they grew is because the Middle East is a hotbed for zealotry. ISIS weren't the first of their ilk and they won't be the last.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ProcrastinatingStill In reply to XenAshwood [2014-09-10 22:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes. The Iraq War was pointless. However the American troops weren't zealots and fundies like ISIS. We never killed people for not follwing a violent brand of Islam. We never targeted a specific ethnic group like ISIS who thinks Yazidis worship the Devil.

Bush wanted oil. ISIS wants people to join their death cult or die. Lesser of the two evils.

XenAshwood In reply to ProcrastinatingStill [2014-09-11 01:51:58 +0000 UTC]

No, I equate greed-fueled murder with religious murder. Its still murder. People still die, the reason doesn't matter.

Mishai In reply to XenAshwood [2014-09-25 08:37:06 +0000 UTC]

there is huge difference!...greed person wanna profit...he wanna make most money for minimal prize, he dont gives a fuck about inocents but have no profit in hurting them and so goes directly to achieve his goals...money/oil

zealot wanna kill all people with different opinion which dont fit in his opinions...he will stop at nothing he cares about nothing and his only goal is kill and destroy ...

in result greed guy will roll directly through your city with a tank...yea he will cause damage he will kill people but he will do so in only that one single road to his goal...zealot will wipe whole city destroying everything...which is big difference...

ProcrastinatingStill In reply to XenAshwood [2014-09-11 22:07:11 +0000 UTC]

Still. Millions of people could die at the hands of a bunch of zealots. I think it could be a good idea to stop them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

XenAshwood In reply to ProcrastinatingStill [2014-09-12 00:26:47 +0000 UTC]

Maybe, but the U.S. has a tendency to slaughter innocents along with guilty and call it collateral damage. Tell me, do you think ISIS or the U.S. wil kill more people? I say either side will cause roughly the same amount.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ProcrastinatingStill In reply to XenAshwood [2014-09-12 20:08:30 +0000 UTC]

Religious fanaticism is the worst possible thing to ever happen to the world. Many areas of the Middle East are now stuck in the Middle Ages because of it.

ISIS will kill anybody who doesn't follow their death cult. The US couldn't tell apart a citizen from a terrorist. At least the US doesn't want to stone gays or women who don't wear burqas.

XenAshwood In reply to ProcrastinatingStill [2014-09-12 20:22:14 +0000 UTC]

Religon of any sort is a bad thing. It only causes hatred and strife.
Well, the stoning gays part is open to debate.as a country we aren't to accepting of gays, even if we don't outright kill them, LGBT people like myself aren't exactly tolerated in most of the U.S. though i do see your point, ISIS is a problem.
